1965 Shelby Cobra 427 Finished

IMHO, this is a disappointing kit for several reasons:

  1. The box cover indicates that the kit is a “NEW” kit. In fact, the kit uses molds from 1988. The result is flash that needs to be removed.
  2. The diameter of the wheel spindles are WAY, WAY, WAY smaller than the openings in the wheels. The wheels flop around after they are installed on the spindles. See my WIP to see how I solved this problem.
  3. The tires/wheels extend outside of the fenders.
  4. The windshield frame is too thick and it does not have locating pins. I glued two wires into holes that I drilled in the frames and then glued the wires into holes that I drilled in the fenders.
  5. The two electric cooling fans that are located in front of the radiator are missing from the kit.
  6. The finished model does not have the “aggressive” appearance of a 427 Cobra. It looks more like a bulked-up 289 Cobra.

The wheels and engine are very nicely detailed.

All issues aside, this turned out really nice. I love what you did here, it looks amazing. Ya, I agree, it looks a bit off for a 427 car, but still looks great. The best looking Cobra, IMHO, is the 1/16 MPC kit from years ago. They are not hard to find, but go from decent money. They build up really nice. Great work on this one.

Despite all the errors/difficulties you turned this one round, in fine fashion

She looks awesome! Paint came out great. I’ve got the Mongram 427 kit in the stash and I want to do it as Ken Miles car at Willow Springs

Thanks for the kind words. I’ll take a look for the MPC model.

The kit itself may be “off” a bit but your work isn’t ! And it shows nicely.

Maybe so, but as everyone already said above, you’d never know it from your finished product.

I really like it, and I love the colors. That is such a cool car, the lines and everything about it…

Hi:

Irregardless of the kit’s flaws you have built an outstanding model here. Love yur color choice too. It makes it stand mean!

Jeez. I just commented on the WIP and here it is all completed!! What a great turn out this one is. Painting and detailing are at a premium in this build.

I do hear what you’re saying in regard to the position of the wheel/ tire assy in the wheel opening and I find that I deal with this issue on a MULTITUDE of kits. I just finished the AMT 67 Mustang GT Fastback earlier this year and fought the stance and wheel positioning on that kit hard to get the look that I was after. Same stuff, wheel/ tires sticking outside of the wheel opening and too high in the front / too low in the back issues that had to be corrected for the build to look passable as a replica.

This is my take on the tires sticking outside of the fenders. When this kit was originally offered in 1988 the tires were much narrower, so they fit within the fenders. The current kit includes wider tires. The chassis was not modified to accomidate the wider tires, so the tires stick outside of the fenders.

Johnny, you did an excellent job on this model. What kit actually is this and is it readily available.

Sorry for the slow reply, but I haven’t received e-mail notifications for years. The Cobra is a Revell of Germany kit. You can buy the kit from them directly. Also, there are a number of other online stores that carry that kit.

Thanks Johnny. I have always wanted to build that kit . I need to find a source now hopefully that I have purchased from before that I can order over the phone.
