1960's Olive Drab?

What is the correct OD paint for the Vietnam era? I’m just finished a M578 Light Recovery Vehicle and I’m having difficulty with the painting. I’ve applied MM 34087 over a black base but it looks to light/faded. Any suggestions?

'60s OD was darker than WWII OD. Here are a few methods that I have used to replicate it.

  1. Paint overall MM OD Green FS#34087, then I give it an overall wash of black, then drybrush with the OD again. Here is how it comes out.

  1. Krylon makes a spray paint in a can that is part of their Camo Colors line for painting things in camo. The OD Green color is close to 60’s Dark OD Green.

  1. Testors MM Dark Green FS#34709 as a base coat , then drybrushed with some OD looks close too.

Good luck.

In the mid-1950’s the standard switched from FS 34087 to FS 24087, which is called Dark Olive semi-gloss. Once in the field and dirty, it appeared like the later 4-color camo colors Dark Green FS 34102 or Forest Green FS 34079. I don’t know of anyone who makes FS 24087. I would have to say the above #3 would be my choice.

Tim, I just mixed up some of my own. I used MM OD and added flat black to it. I found the color I wanted when I got to about a 30 to 70 mix of black to OD. Made my old Tamiya M60A1 look quite like the one I trained on in 1973. Experiment a little and you’ll get the look you want.
