1940 Ford Coupe

Finished this one the other day. Other than the intake, carbs, air cleaners, and the wired distributor, it’s box stock. Paint is Tamiya acrylic clear orange over Bronze. There is no clear coat.

Very nice build! Great paint job and photos too! [Y] [Y] [Y]

Thank you sir.

I like using those Tamiya clear colors over a base coat as well. I’ve even done them up over solid colors. You can further buff them up as you would clear. If the clear color went down smooth enough I often use the old fashion Colgate tooth paste, then follow that up with two applications of Formular One Scratch out. Takes the haze out of the tooth paste application and clears the finish all the more in general ( worth a few spoon test shoots to try that out). The best way I’ve found to paint in those side chrome strips is to mask then off and brush it in . I have a Folk Art acrylic that does a nice job for that or Molotow.

Nice job here though ! Back in the day I can’t say how many of these and the sedan even more so that I built ( the 39 and 40 rendition both, turn some into circle track racers, custom , street and strip and bone stock). I like the stance of your build, over all look. And engine bay, the engine bay looks awesome.

Thanks for all the info and your comments. Much appreciated.

Hey!

How about that! A bottle of Root Beer shaped like a car, And its a great looking car too. Nice job!

Great paint job, and love the ‘street level’ photos, very cool.

Did you experience many fit issues with this AMT?

Thanks man. I did have an issue fitting the interior tube to the body and chassis.

Was there any alignment issue of the hood to cowl with that coupe ? On the 40 Ford sedan there is but not so much if you built the 39 version which I was. The 39 and 40 Ford hoods are slightly different. Both included in the kit.

I don’t recall way back when ( last time I built the coupe, especially near stock and not gutted as a race care) doing much to massage the interior tub. What was the nature of that issue ?

Hi Oldermodelguy!

I think I can give you the answer there. When I did my 49 Chevy coupe right after the Forty Ford they both had the same problem. I don’t know for sure, But I think the molds were getting a little old in the tooth on the backside making the dashboard area a wee bit wider than it was supposed to be. Remember they have a Male and Female side to those molds! The Female side being the exteriors.

Could be TB. I probably trimmed a bit on the sedan as well but it was a couple of years ago now.

The hood did seem a little wide towards the windshield but a little massaging seem to do the trick.
