100th Anniversary of WWI group build

Hello guys, I’m considering starting a WWI group build to mark the 100th anniversary for the start of the war.

The group build would start on July 28 2014 the date WWI started. And end on November 11 2015 the 97th anniversary of the ending of WWI.

Anything that took part in WWI would be open, just no what ifs. I’ve already started topic on the aircraft and armor trying to gather interest. And figured you guys over here might be interested as well.

Just let me know what you guys think!

David

Great idea! There is now getting to be more WW1 stuff out there to build, too. Finished the Dreadnaught awhile ago, but see several kits on the market I am looking at picking up, even one in 1:700.

A couple of questions regarding group builds:

  1. Are they for struggling, older, not-so-talented [:$] but interested modelers as well as the usual suspects? (“usual suspects” - the normal, run of the mill extremely talented presenters on most any forum in FineScale Modeler [:D]).

And,

  1. Does one have to post WIP or is it OK to just present a completed model?

Mike

I’m definitely in!

Mike, group builds are about modelers coming together to build under a common theme/interest, nothing to do with how much talent they have.

Not sure the rule here on WIP, but most often people will post a shot of the unbuilt kit, followed with some in progress work (some forums have this as mandatory, just to keep people honest, example: posting a finished piece that was already completed over a year ago). This way they can share a tip, or ask advice on a problem area, and possibly learn some history along the way.

I dunno, not sharing any of your progress would be like joining a hobby club, but never showing up to the meetings until your build is complete?

regards,

Jack

Yeah, or having a girlfriend/ boyfriend that you don’t date.

I find that in group builds, I have to restrain myself from constantly posting updates. I also always lead off with a sprue/ box shot. It’s a great intro and actually surprises me sometimes when I go back and look- wow, that was some kit.

I feel like I just did two WW1 subjects so I might not join. But it’s a long enough run date that who knows?

Jack,

Thanks for the clarification. Since there’s lots of time before the GB begins I may consider joining in. I might learn a lot more than I would have just building alone without reference to others’ ideas, tricks, and helpful pictures.

GMorrison,

At my age I should be so lucky as to have a girlfriend! [:D] (imaginary ones don’t count).

Mike

Thanks for the interest guys. I’m going to make a thread on the group build forum tonight, since we have enough members between the aircraft and ship forums.

Mike, Jack covered pretty much everything already.
