Hello, I don’t know if this is the proper forum to post this but I’m really not sure where else it could go. Not to long ago I really wanted to build the Big Boy Locomotive. I work at a locomotive manufacturing plant in Boise ID and have a soft spot in my hart for the old steam era. It is the 4-8-8-4 Big Boy locomotive built by the American Locomotive Company and operated by Union Pacific to haul freight over the Wasatch Range between Green River Wyoming and Ogden Utah. Here you go.

This is a beautiful, interesting model. I especially like the weathering, and the metallic look on the front of the boiler.
As I’ve commented in another thread, I wish there were more static steam locomotive kits on the market. They make great models - even if they don’t run on tracks.
That looks great man! I’ve looked at that kit several times in Hobby Lobby and thought it was so cool. Thanks for showing how well they can turn out.[:D[

It was a super fun build. A little frustrating at times. The parts fit is something to be desired
If I were to do it again, I would remove the molded steam lines and replace them with wire or stretched sprue.

I’ve seen two of the real McCoys; there is one on display in a park in Cheyenne, WY and one indoors at the transportation museum in Denver. Most impressive machine!
Your BB came out very nice. I recently saw a report of a BB that was located in a museum in California and was purchased by UP. It was pulled by a 4,300 hp UP diesel locomotive up to their repair facility in Wyoming to have it rebuilt and restored to running condition. The UP had 25 of these huge monsters built for them from 1941 to 1944 and only 8 remain in existence.
I love steam locomotives and enjoy riding them when possible, they are very special.

Super looking BB! I have always wanted to build this model but have heard that it is not a very good one, things like heavy molded on handrails, pipes, etc. Is this what you found to be true?

Yes, and the plastic seems to be brittle. If I were to build it again, I would dremel off the handrails, steam pipes and replace them with brass or stretched sprue.
Otherwise, it was a fun build. I would recommend it if you could find one inexpensive enough. I didn’t pay retail.

Awesome build look kike the real thing BTW if we can hang around for a couple of more years we might be lucky enough to see the Big Boy they’re trying to bring back in operating condition, Trains magazine had a special issue on the restoration. Karl
