1/72 T-72

are there any 1/72 T-72 or other iraqi modern tanks?
(technically, it is a russian tank, right?)

Ace Models does mainly 1/72 Soviet/Russian models, including T-72 and other modern pieces that were/are seen in Iraq. Check them out here:

thanks!

I’ve built that ACE T-72 that was mentioned by HeavyArty. It was a pretty challenging build, but not as bad as the T-55 they put out. Their molding is improving a bit as time passes, but their kits are still a frustrating and difficult challenge to do. They do build into some very nice looking and attractive models though, as seen here with my ACE T-72 in 1/72 scale:

This particular kit also comes with decals for not one, but two Iraqi T-72 tanks.

ACE also does the Iraqi T-55 Enigma tank as well. These were used in the first Persian Gulf War, and I think a few were seen in OIF, but Col. Rob would know better than I do.

PST and ACE both offer T-55 kits in 1/72nd. Italeri just re-boxed the old ESCI T62 in 1/72nd. Had the original ESCI T62, traded it away as not into modern.

Revell-ogram has or had a T80 in 1/72nd. Matchbox boxed it as well - one of their very few 1/72nd kits. Now I think it’s just Revell of Germany offering the same kit.
One version had all the ERA armor, the other (Monogram boxing) did not.

Nice, crisp molds with link/length track. I have the Monogram version without the ERA. I’m not into modern armor anymore, got it in a trade pkg. If you want it, make me an offer. Also have an ACE BMP in 1/72nd, has PE included, same, if you want it, let me know. Postage from PGH to OH would be cheap. Else, they gather dust.

The Monogram, Matchbox and Revell T-80B are all the same kit. The Monogram and Matchbox versions are missing pieces shown in the instruction, but they are included in both Revell T-80B and T-80BV (w/ERA) versions. Before Revell released it with all the parts, the old Eduard PE set was necessary to add all the missing pieces from the Monogram/Matchbox kit.

The T-80 series was not used by Iraq though. The T-72, T-62 and T-55 were used by Iraq.

I’ve got a love/hate relationship with the T-62 and have all boxings of the Esci T-62 and T-62M (in Italeri and another Ace model company from Asia, not to be confused with Ace models from the Ukraine).

The only difference between the T-62 and T-62M kit is the addition of side skirts and a laser range finder added above the main gun. The (Asian) Ace model kit contains the T-62M sprue but does not call out the use of the laser range finder.

This is another kit that greatly benefits from the old Eduard PE set. That set adds some turret details, adds the missing headlight guards, details the exhaust and adds some external linkage to the main gun. The main gun is poor and benefits from the Armo aluminum barrel (72744).

The PST T-55 kits are quite good and can be used to detail out the old T-62. I have taken a peek inside the Ace T-55 kits but so far have steered clear because of my experience with the Ace BMP-1.

I believe I’ve built every kit mentioned by Col Rob and nfafan have mentioned, so if you’d like to see what they look like built up, let me know. I can post pics for you.

Just being helpful.

sure duke!
I’ll be glad to see the pics!

thanks every body!

oh and duke, cool models!

Okay, here are a few of them now. These are representative of what I’ve got built. I’ll start with another pic of my ACE T-72:

Here is one of my T-62 tanks by Italeri, done up in Israeli colors:

Next are two of my PST models. This first one is my T-54:

And the PST T-55:

Now here are the two T-80’s I have built. The first one is the standard T-80 tank:

And the one with the reactive armor on it:

Nice collection of Soviet/Russian armor. All you need now is a T-64.

Yeah! Thanks Rob, your postivie comments mean alot to me. I would love to get a T-64, but nobody that I’m aware of makes it in 1/72 scale. That would certainly add to my collection.

The T-80’s are great Duke. Are they the revell kits? Is the reactive armor aftermarket or was it in the kit?

Yes, the T-80’s are the Revell/Monogram kits. The one with reactive armor did come with the armor in the kit already. They were fun and quick builds, although putting the RA on was a bit tough with the directions. I had to use some reference pics to be sure I was doing it right.

Thanks for the great comments guys!
