Just getting around to posting some pics of a kit that I completed a while ago. With the help of several members of this forum I was able to determine that I had, in fact, assembled it with the props reversed. (A 50/50 shot, and I messed up - go figure - a blind monkey would have the same odds of getting it right !)
What you see here is corrected. Thanks guys !
I really liked the scheme for this one. It’s built right out of the box.
Several months after completing it, I saw a wartime photo of the plane in a Flight Journal magazine - cool ! Hope you like it.
Duckman - The scale is 1/72. And yeah - it’s actually cleaner than I would like. I tried to do some weathering but it is a little too understated. I need to hit it with some more pastels - especially behind the superchargers. All the pics I see of lightnings have a beige, dusty look behind them.
OldHooker - I liked the teeth too, I thought they really looked good on this particular “F” version 'cuz the nacelles are so sleek looking - they have the same shape as a real shark. The later Lightning versions had larger cowls over the front of the nacelles.
Dragonfly - There were good and bad things about this kit (It’s an Airfix by the way). The Starboard tail boom was a little warped. I corrected it a bit - but it’s still noticable if you’re looking for it. I liked the fact that the superchargers were separate pieces - it made painting easier.
Philp,
I don’t know if it’s old or new Airfix. The rivets were “outstanding” - so I’m guessing it’s an older version. I toned down the rivets and panel lines a bit with a little sanding.
Drew,
Yeah these are the kit decals. Only one small problem was that the yellow was a little off register with the white background on the "S"s over the radiators (I think they’re radiators). Other than that - they were pretty good.
