1/72 scale pilot and ground support figures.

I am an airplane builder with a few armor tossed in, so I usually do not build figures. I have some figures I want to pose in and around my static displays to give a sense of size and scale to the aircraft. I never seem to get a good color for their faces, what ever I try looks too brown or pink. I know painting eyes or mouths on these tiny figures at 1/72 scale would just make them clownish, but is there something I should do to make the facial features stand out a bit? The main subject is, of course, the aircraft but I wanted to improve the figures a bit. I just wanted a few tips from experienced figure builders.
