What’s the best 1/72 scale version of the Saab Viggen? I remember building the Airfix kit when I was a kid, but being disappointed with the kit - it just didn’t seem to do justice to such a cool-looking aircraft! Are there any other 1/72 scale offerings of the Viggen, or is Airfix the only game in town?
If I recall correctly, the Airfix kit was pretty woeful and represented a prototype or very early production variant.
Way back when, I recall building a Matchbox Viggen, which was pretty bare-bones and I believe there is/was a Heller kit in 1/72 but I can’t comment on it as I haven’t seen it.
Moving up scale, ESCI produced a 1/48th kit which in more recent times was reboxed by Airfix (?) I don’t know about current availability though.
Hi !
Heller kit. Actually the best choice, but some personal work wainting for you (panel lines specialy)

Heller kit. Note that this was never re-boxed by Ayrfix. The Airfix kit was based on the prototype, and resembles production machines only insofar as it has the right number of wings.
On the Heller kit, airframe’s right, you can fix the rest. Note that this applies only to the AJ-34 version. The JA-34, in real life, is slightly larger than the AJ-34, but Heller have used the same parts for both kits, with an extra sprue for the extra JA-34 parts, which include some not very convincing Skyflash AAMs.
Cheers,
Chris.
i always prefered the draken for some reason
Hasegawa has a 1/72 Viggen, but it is also based on the prototype. I have one, but haven’t built it yet. Doesn’t look like too bad of a kit.
Thanks for the info, guys!
