Anyone know of an aftermarket set of 1/72 P-40B/C decals? I’m looking for a set of US markings… the pre- and early war markings. I’ve been searching but have not found any.
JWB,
I’m working on one myself right now I was looking for Boyington’s markings…Found a sheet of early US stars and such at squadron look in decals 1/72nd scale (I don’t remember which manufacuror) but there is a set and Roll models probably has them too!
I still haven’t found the correct for boyingtons AVG so if you happen on some please let me know!!! Good Hunting, G.W.
Gentlemen:
if you find decals for P-40B from Wheelers Field … let me know PLZ
[:D]
Thanks! I hadn’t seen those- those do help. I’d hoped to find the squadron and serial numbers. I may have to try and print those out.
I built Boyington’s bird in 1/48 last year, and it took me forever to find the decals. EagleCal had them, but they were listed as out of stock. I emailed them and asked them if they had anymore, and after a few emails, they sent me a set. Where to find that in 1/72 I wouldn’t know. You’d think as popular as AVG subjects are, those decals would be in great supply.
You might be able to find a 21 (or a matching 2 and 1, even) for the fuselage numbers. The Adam and Eve decal may be a little harder… freehand maybe?
If I see some, I’ll let you know!
Will do! [:D]
Solution found- in my own backyard! (So to speak.)
I figured out what I can do- last week I picked up Pavla’s 1/72 P-43 Lancer. I plan to build it using the Chinese markings. However, it has the pre-/early war US markings too! The numbers might not be exact, but I’m not to worried about that!
Woo-hoo! Had the solution all the time. [:)]
Glad to hear you were able to solve your problem Jon! [:D]
Hi,
Glad you found your solution!!! Good Hunting, G.W.
Thanks guys! I actually found a pic of a P-40C from the 20th PG. Even though the P-43 decals as is are not correct, between the serials and the Group markings- which are the same size, I’ll be able to hack 'em up to get a correct tail number! There is a Group badge on the side, but i think I can print it out on decal paper, and that’ll do it! [:)]
Sounds like a good deal. Best of luck on your project. Please post pictures.

Sky Models sheet 72058 has a good range of P-40’s, including early versions. I bought one from Hannants recently for GBP4.60. I’m not sure, but I think the early version examples may all be AVG. Worth checking though. I’m not at home just now so I can’t check for you - sorry.
One of the old Esci decal sheets included several examples of the P-36; perhaps something here could be adapted for an early USAAC P-40. Esci decal sheets show up fairly frequently on eBay.
Alternatively, the AML P-40B/C kit contains a couple of USAAC examples, being (1) 54th Pursuit Gp, 1942 & (2) 55th Pursuit Sqn, 35th Pursuit Gp, Hamilton Field, California, 1940. Maybe you could appeal to someone who has built the model and doesn’t need the remaining portions of the decal sheet.
My final suggestion is to wait for the forthcoming Trumpeter kit - it might have just what you want…
