1/72 KC-10 or KC-135

Got a B-52H, now time for some tankers. Does anyone know where I can find a plastic model of a KC-10 or KC-135? I know AMT/ Ertl has a 1/72 KC-135, saw that on Ebay, but where can I get a KC-10. Could I just modify an airliner model? Isn’t there some plane called the KC-10??? Thanx for the ideas!! [:)]

The USAFs KC-10 Extender is indeed a military version of the DC-10 civilian airliner. It is the same basic airframe/engine combination. The KC-10 has the extra, 2 wheel main landing gear between the two 4 wheel bogies to handle the extra weight. Some DC-10s also have that. The KC-10 has a somewhat different refueling boom than the KC-135. It has vertical winglets on the ends of the V wings about midway down the fixed part of the boom. The boomers compartment is quite a bit different. The boomer lays on his/her belly in the 135, but sits upright in the 10. All of the KC-10s have a probe and drogue hose/basket combination just forward and to starboard of the regular boom attachment point. The very last KC-10 manufactured has a refueling pod under each wingtip with a hose/basket combination similar to what the HCand KC-130s have. Some of the earlier KC-10s have been retrofitted with this setup. The intent was to retrofit the entire fleet, but money shortages have so far precluded that. They can refuel 3 fighters simultaneously. The center one can be probe/drogue or flying boom type while the two outboards of course have to be probe/drogue only. The KC-10 has a large upward hinged cargo door on the port side behind the cockpit like the KC-135. The floor is strengthened a bunch to hold heavy cargo and has built in rollers and tie down points. I don’t know of any kits of the KC-10 or DC-10 in 1/72. I have seen 1/144 and 1/200 AM decal sets for DC-10s, so there must be kits out there somewhere. [alien]

Revell did have a DC-10 in 1/144 some years ago that was released several times with different decals. You could score one on EBay. Then there may possibly be some aftermarket conversion parts for it if you look hard. I believe there was a vacuform kit in 1/72 of the Kc-10. It was some company out of England. They also do 747 kits in 1/72. The only injection kit in production I know of is the 1/200 from Hasegawa. It has the extra landing gear but no hose and drogue pods.

Hi,

The Civ DC10 model with the heavy gear was the -30.
The Dutch KLu also use the 10 for transport work.
I think Doyusha did a 100 scale DC10 - 40, thats about the closest you will come to it.

I believe that one of the British vac form outfits did a 1/72 DC-10 and someone did do a conversion set to make it a KC-10.

I’ll look around the net and see what I can scare up.

O.K. Here’s what I found for KC-10 stuff

Aircraft in Miniature offer a 1/72 DC-10-30 in vac form with some resin and photoetch by Transport Wings:

They offer a cast metal KC-10A conversion kit for it:

Hope thats some help to you

£70 Ai Caramba!

Yep, thats the POLITE way of putting it[:D]

Heller has also just put out a re-issue of the KC-135A.

Wow [:O], that’s a lot of stuff, thanx guys, i’ll get back to you soon about the kits.

Thanx again!

Rare Plane also had a vacuform KC-135 in 1/72. I’m not a big vac fan but the decal sheet was beautiful.

‘Correction’…It was a company called Nova that produced the above vac kit.
Sorry.
