BTW: I also got the 1/72 US. Navy GATO-CLASS Submarine!!

Hi

I’ll just post here too… [;)] I’m also looking for a good submarine to start with. What would you say about that kit for a sub-first-timer? Any other suggestions to start with? I would prefer 1/72 scale…

I’ve been thinking of getting VII C Wolf Pack + Eduard PE set myself (if I can find any). Anyone know what are the differences between these two kits?

Hi Guys,

Congrats FREAK on buying both VIIC and GATO, both very nice.

Skipwankman - get the kit! The VIIC/41 is the 1941 variation with more gun platforms and some minor differences to the VIIC, excellent kit.

Eduard PE is excellent, but there are others you may want too. Here are some information sources on builds and discussions:

The boat is a fun build, I like the VIIC/41 version for the added AA guns. The Eduard set adds a lot to the appearance but be careful on bending/folding the radar screen, it can be done backwards. I picked up all the CK interior sets but wasn’t sure if they could be used for a (41) so I’m saving them for the earlier VIIC. Mine is nearly ready for painting but have yet decided on what scheme to do? Good luck on your project.

Archangel (and others), you might find some useful paint info from Dougie Martindale’s well-researched Kriegsmarine Paint/u-boot colours article here:

Post some pix, would love to see!

Well i’ve built her. Not too happy with the fitting issue not very severe though. I’m used to build better fit models of Tamiya. Newer Revell’s mould is lookin better though. Guess they learned.

My suggestion: Be patient. And drill the free flooding vents/holes especially those above the waterlines. It really adds up to the realism. Better to endure a few weeks pain of having to drill those holes than to have a toyish look to the built model. Besides you’ve spent some money on her. She deserves the best effort [:)]. And you will earn for your sweat/toil in the end. Believe me.

Oh yea, research the sub, look for real pic of the sub in color. And look for some amazingly built model just for reference. If you are planing to add the rust effect you need to know where to apply them. Be careful as this may actually destroy/damage the realism looks of your boat if not done carefully. Too much is the customary habit for beginners. Color of the upper hull and lower hull is everything. Pick your color carefully. Look at rokket site lots of useful info on coloring the boat. Good luck.
