1/700 Scale HIJN Chuyo WIP (update 9-30-12)

I started this kit last week and I am currently adding walkways and platforms but have no pics yet of those.

Construction Progress

Construction part 2

Tom’s Model Works PE

More progress

I did some adjustments to the 25mm gun tubs so I can install the walkways get the guardrails on and work on the bow and stern detail.

I still have work to do before install the 127mm gun tubs and associated walkways ladders and guardrails.

I’ll be trying to get some more pictures up of my progress sometime in the next couple of days. Right now I do have a few walkways up on the Starboard side of the carrier and also a couple inclined ladders up going to the foreward 25mm gun tubs.

Aft section I have one ladder up on the aft 25mm gun gallery and I’ll be adding another ladder later and I am planning on adding a observation platform and vertical ladder above the boat deck and I’ll need to also wait afterwards so I can order some watertight doors to add watertight doors to areas that need them.

Foreward section I haven’t done anything yet to that area plans are to remove the platform and ladders from the forecastle/Bridge and replace them with some styrene sheet and PE inclined ladders and railings. Then I’ll add ladders to the foreward 25mm gun tubs and foreward 127mm gun platforms so it will definitely look interesting when I am through with that section.

I do believe I owed you guys some pics of the progress I am making on adding scratchbuilt detail on the Chuyo and I am going to post what progress I did make on the kit.

I need to work on getting those platforms on the bow area but I do think I am making good progress

I got these goodies in today to go with the Chuyo late war IJN aircraft which are quite beautiful with nice injection molded pieces and great PE details.

Look forward to following this build Mikey!

I am watching with interest. Me likes Japanese carrier kits.

I still have alot of work to do still The port and starboard gun tubs need installation temporarily so that I can mark where I am going to move them to.

BTW if you like this just wait I’ll probably be doing the Aoshima Soryu or the Fujimi Shokaku next.

And those LionRoar 1/700 scale planes have ordinance and belly tanks as well as PE propellers and landing gear. Oh and I did get more pictures taken.

I actually have more progress today. Did the stairs for the 12.7mm tubs found out they were too long and shortened them a bit. Ok my plan for the aft gun tubs is to tack them on and run some Tamiya tape to mark the area that I’ll be reloacting the gun tubs to then remove the guns trim off the locating pins then glue them into place and let them dry.

here are the instructions for the Lionroar Japanese aircraft.

And here are the two othe Japanese carriers I am planning to build

Soryu

Fujimi Shokaku 1941 fitting

Fiddly, Mikey, nice brasswork.

This makes me wish that I still built 1/700 kits, but, unfortunately, diminishing eye sight makes that impossible. Now I wish that the Japanese carrier line would be expanded in 1/350!

Bill

Fujimi makes a 1/350 scale Shokaku Hasegawa makes a 1/350 Akagi. I do think those two companies put out at least 5 1/350 scale IJN Carriers.

Mike,

I do know about those, but I was referring to the lesser carriers such as Shoho, Zuiho, Chuyo, etc. I should have been more specific in my original post. One can only dream, and keep writing to the manufacturers . . .

Bill

Suits me gents, I prefer 1/350 scale and would love to do an Akagi so thanks for the heads up!

Well it took a while for a 1/350 scale US Escort carrier to come out on the market from one of the big manufacturers so it can still be possible for a Japanese escort carrier to show up on the market someday.

But of course I still wouldn’t buy it because it would cost alot of money so that’s why I’ll stick with the 1/700 scale versions they are cheaper. Heck the last time I spent over $200 was on the Trumpeter 1/350 scale USS Nimitz and that price tag was $221. But the 1/700 scale Shokaku that I bought was a little over $50 and it has about as many parts(around 200) as its 1/350 scale big brother from the same manufacturer(Fujimi).

BTW if you can find them Nichimo has several 1/550 scale Japanese carriers including the Shinano.

Mikey, have you posted any pics of the 1/350 Nimitz? It may be the next carrier I do!

No Jockster I haven’t posted any pics of the Nimitz as it is still in storage at the moment . But I’ll definitely wait on it as my work desk is smaller than the carrier which is several feet long yet I can fit a Essex hull on my desk just fine.LOL

Mikey,

Unfortunately, 1/700 is no longer an option for me because of diminishing eyesight. I just cannot see the small parts, let along photoetch. I need the 1/350 or larger kits. It is just a fact of advancing age. So, for me, those $100.00 and up pricetags are high, but in some ways, worth it.

Bill

I got the 12.7cm gun tubs installed and I am going to do the 25mm tubs later but first I need to fill in the holes where the tubs inserted into.

I also made some purchases on friday of Photoetch watertight hatches degausing wire 25mm guns (Twin , triple) and Photoetch figures. Those should arrive by this friday then yesterday I ordered some White Ensign paint in Japanese camo colors.

Looks like the last picture if I took it on a piece of green paper someone could photoshop it to look like it was on the ocean.

If I may; I would suggest you paint all the photo etched parts before installing them. As a rule, I always paint the entire PE sheet the most prevalent color of the ship before assembling the parts with a very thin coat of paint. While it does require doing touch-ups as you go along, it will be way easier than having to paint such things as stairwells that you show after they have been installed.

Everyone has a favorite way to apply PE. That’s just the way I do it.

FWIW.

Sorry I haven’t updated in a while I have been working on a couple of 1/720 scale Italeri Nimitz Class carriers but I did start on putting Degausing cables on the Chuyo.

Here are the cables I installed so far by adding detail that was missing on the kit.

I am going to finish the cables later in the next day or so then go back to work on the platforms on the port side. Plus I did get my watertight hatches in so I’ll add those when I get done with the platforms.
