I decided to do a quick build of a 1/600 Queen Mary 2. I’m going to try to build all the 1/600 ocean liners available before I move back to the larger scales.
Looks great so far.
I’m curious what your process is for coloing in the windows on these kits, they’re always so clean. These all look molded in, but I know on past builds of yours they havent been.
Thanks Alterean. It really depends on the kit. I prefer masking and painting but that often isn’t possible. I have used masking, PE Frames, decals, a paint pen, and a fine line ink pen on diferent kits. I have also used combinations of the previously mentioned on some kits. The windows are always the hardest thing to color for me on these liners.
This Queen Mary 2 has a bit of everything. There are the molded in windows, lots of decal windows, and a bunch of clear parts that needed to be masked and sprayed.
These are clear parts that were masked and sprayed on Queen Mary 2.
Looking great!
Thanks Don!
More progress on 1/600 Queen Mary 2. I’ve decided I’m going to build this straight out of the box with hardly any PE for a change. I think the cost of PE railings to do this kit will be more money than the kit. Just the balconies alone would be expensive. I would rather put that cost into the 1/400 version. Out of the box really makes it a quick build.
The 1/400 version comes with PE railings and much more plus wooden decks. The problem is finding one at a reasonable price. I would assume Revell will make some more some day in the future. If you like cruise ships it’s a kit worth buying.
Yes I have seen there is a platinum edition, all inclusive. I think that is the isue for me as far as a lack of enthusiasm towards this kit/ship…I’m not a fan of cruise ships. Queen Mary 2 is a true ocean liner but the apartment block decks she has are too similar to cruise ships for my liking. I’m old and my tastes run towards classic things in life lol. I’ll still wind up building the 1/400 though.
I too prefered the classics but a couple of years ago a group of us went on an enjoyable crusie and shortly after returning I saw the QE2 kit and grabbed it. I enjoyed it until I had to paint the balcony areas on a seemingly endless basis. I gave the finished kit to my son who loves cruising.
jefpez I’m sure the interior of the new cruise ships are amazing. Ocean liner models are a lot of repetition. Lifeboats, davits, windows…
I said I was gonna build this out of the box but I flip flopped and started doing black PE railings on the balconies of 1/600 QM2. Did the first four blocks on one side. I have some Gold Medal stainless PE which I can never seem to bend correctly so I’ll use it up here since these are straight runs. I’ll use brass for the rest of the railings. I also changed the color of the screw blades from copper to something more towards a steel color.
Very nice! You are a ship building machine ![]()
Thanks keavdog. Well I had 50 years of catch up to do to get a ship model collection lol. In all seriousness it was a unique year with lots of in the house time. I’m taking a break after this one as I just bought a 3D printer kit that I have to put together and learn how to use. I’m hoping to be able to use it to make some jigs for PE and possibly some parts for larger scale models in the future.
Hi;
Can You say Sintered Bronze Metallic? That’s what you have on them there proproellior(LOL!! Intentional !) thingies ! Also, Where’d you get the Ship?
I originally painted the propellers copper as per the painting guide. On some other forums I belong to I was told by many that the painting guide was terribly wrong and the props should be more towards a silver color. They were easy enough to repaint so that’s what I did.
I bought the kit off Ebay. This is 1/600 Heller, same exact kit as Airfix except for the tinting of the clear parts and the decal sheet. It’s actually not that easy a kit to find in the US.
Yeah!
I have tried ALL my sources and they either( Over the phone) go DUH? or in person Roll their eyes. What’sa matter with folks these days? I am still trying to get an old copy or Revell’s Brasil/Argentina - Moore/McCormack ship. Found one. would you believe $350.00!
I had heard somewhere that this kit was going to be released again. Scalemates has it listed as 201X and showing a new box. I see a few listed in Germany on Ebay in this new box so maybe it will be out soon.
If you think $350 is bad, I have seen 1/350 Lusitania kits listed on Ebay for $550 lol.
Is there a plastic kit of the QE 1?
I built a wood kit of it when I was a kid. Seems to me it was a Scientific kit. Big enough to put an electric motor in.
