it’s funny , ive been modelling since i was about 5 and put my first Aurora dino kit together (with my moms help ) as i moved on i ran the gamit of kits ,armor , aircraft , cars , even the little metal dragon stuff , but now ive found myself doing some of the most challenging modelling of my life , but i find when i post in forums like this one , guys like me are not really taking very seriously , i would like to know why ???
just to give you an idea ,until recently , there were no commercialy avalible kits in 1/6 , some small company’s and groups were making some vehicles , but they were quite $$$$$ and not always the best looking pieces .
now as the hobby grows , a large number of cottage business are popping up , making some amazing product , much is cast in resin , an art all on its own , and you talk about detail , in 1/6 scale you can have more detail then you can imagine , allot of guys scratchbuild the majority of there vehicles , thats serious modelling , but since it’s associated with G.Ijoe sized action figures , the wonderful work going on out there gets vastly overlooked , i feel its too bad , it’s a great hobby ,with a good fellowship of collectors who get together and assemble huge dioramas , just for fun !
sorry for the rant , im just tired of being labeled a dolly man ![:D]
After all your likely to try and run me down with a 1/6 tank or something, so that is a risk I’m not going to take.
There was a similar stigma around large scale railway modeling in the UK, but that has since diminshed to the point where scales like 1/12 are making an amzing come back.
There’s a stigma?
I think they’re cooler than all get-out!
I think your rant is a bit unfounded: I’ve never heard a single derogatory comment about 1/6 modeling. (Well, besides the cost!)
Most of what I hear is words of praise and amazement!
Around here, even though it is a big city, I do not see many examples of large scale models, and I think that has a lot to do with the incredible amount of both time and resources (read: money) to make one of these spectacular models. However, I find it strange that ANY modeler would comment anything otherwise. After all, we can ALL be considered children for partaking in this dangerous game [:D]
They certainly have a great big helping of the “WOW” factor, don’t they? [:0] Bloody impressive, I think.
Man, you could cram some serious detail into those things!! So much easier (and harder!) to build than 1/35…
Plus the added advantage of working in braille scale! No offense intended there.
How many actual operating features do you make on your models?
Come to think of it, the largest model tank I’ve ever seen in person is the 1/10 Leopard 2A5 in the Tamiya Head Office lobby! It’s pretty big.
I can only imagine how impressive the 1/6 stuff must be.
I can’t recall ever seeing a post on these Forums belitteling any scale of choice, from teeny to huge, but guess I could have missed one. Is your mild rant directed at something that occured on FSM ? Great looking models BTW.
yes there was a comment here a long time ago , dont take me too seriously , i dont , im just having fun , i will use any excuse to post photo’s and promote the hobby [:D]
LOL! I am SOOO kidding, Panzer! I build all AC but I would so love it if they came out with more large scale models. I’m right with ya on that one. I’d probably only have room for one or two at the most but, man! it would be so worth it!
Best wishes,
Eric
PS. I had a bunch of GI Joe action figures when I was a kid. Action figures, I said, not dolls.
I’ve only seen a few examples of 1/6 but they have been extremly impressive. One day I might be able to branch out into that area but the size and cost are prohibitive. My hat’s off to those who work in that media as I’ve always been in awe of what they can achieve with it. [tup]
Where do you park such huge kits? I think like most, bigger the better. Dragon makes some impressive figures and I wish they had them when I was younger.
Panzerwerk,
Thats incredible stuff. I bet you get a good audience gathering when you bring stuff out on the yard.
One aspect of 1/6 modeling is that it brings alot of women into modeling. I was talking to a babe who was a kinda softspoken and just sewing away busily by hand with her needle and I asked her “Whatcha makin?” Her reply rather matter-a-factly and with some pride was “A 1/6 scale leather bikini covered with individually linked chain mail” [:D][:D][:I][:p]
She was indeed putting the chain mail together link by link!!!
thats very cool !!! its hard to find reliable uni makers and people who can sew , the pays not great , and its allot of work to make scale clothing !
right now i have a guy working on some post war east germans in the first camo pattern used by them after the war “Blumentarn” it was used during the 50’s and 60’s , i plan on making 3 figures , i made the blumentarn pattern in paint on the computer , and sent the jpg to a friend who used his computer to print it on fabric , and another friend is making all the uni pieces using real pieces ive collected as a guide !
it can get expensive , thank god i have a understanding wife !!
