1/48th scale Bandais any good?

I saw on ebay a 1/48 Tiger with full interior. Does Bandai make good kits, or do I go with the 1/48 Tamiya?

Cheers!

The vast majority of Bandai’s stuff was quite nice, and even holds up to today’s standards. The Tiger I is great if you want an interior, but if that’s not a concern, go with Tamiya for an early Tiger I or Skybow for a late Tiger I. The Skybow kit has the Zimmerit molded-in, and is very well executed.

The Bandai 1/48 scale kits were cutting edge models in the 1970s with fairly complete interiors and included engines, drivers compartments, turret interiors, etc. Many of them still hold up well today although some accuracy issues arise on some models as well as mold limitations of the time.

I hear that Bandai will start to reissue these kits themselves. Previously they have been released by Academy, Frog and Fuman on and off throughout the last 20 years.

Nice kits, but not up to the overall quality of the latest Tamiya and certainly not Skybow kits in this scale. Having said that, they still have a more extensive line and they do come with interior detail.

If you can get them at a great price, go for it. The latest Tamiya offerings are mid to late $20’s.

I would have to agree with you Rob. I have numerous 1/48 scale Bandai kits. All of these kits were excellent for the years they were built. Their details were better than Monograms’ in 1/35 scale. I still have those kits that I built and I wish I had the equipment I have now back then. I figure those kits would really look alot better. But they were great teachers for me. If you can get them, they WILL stand up to Tamiya and Skybow. You will really like them. TigerII
