1/48 Tamiya F4U-1 WIP pics

Here are some pics of my “Birdcage” Corsair I’m working on; Sorry 'bout the flash, it washed out the colors a bit, they’re darker than it shows…

Any comments and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated [:)]

THere’s just something about that deep, beautiful blue on Navy planes that I love. Very nice job so far, especially the color variation around the nacelle.
Which kit are you working on? The second kit I’ve built in my adult years was a Corsair (Tamiya offering) and I had a bear of a time getting the wings perfectly aligned. Yours looks much nicer than mine

Looks good so far!

Mucker, my 2nd “real” kit as an adult was also the Tamiya F4U-1A, and I had the same problem with the wings. Once I got them aligned and painted, the joint broke! I ended up put strips of .010 styrene along the joints. It helped a lot.

I really think the kit was designed to be built with the wings folded, Which is what I’m gonna do when I build another one!

Danok2: Wings folded sounds like a good plan! I may try another brand (Revell, Hasegawa, etc.) just to see if I can get the wings to look nice down.

Nice job with the chipping and color variation to show wear, and a nice job on the figure too.

The only suggestion I can think of has a question attached to it… Is the back of the headrest going to be seen when she’s all buttoned up ? If it is - then I would hit it with the appropriate color (ZnCr ?). Looks like it’s coming along really well - I’ll be looking forward to seeing the finished pics.

Gunner–
your corsair looks fantastic. How did you achieve the shadowing effect on the engine radiators?

Looks good so far. The Tamiya kit is designed for the wings to be folded, which does complicate assembly when you want them extended. Looks like you handled it well.

Looking good! Like the paint weathering, nicely done.

Nice work

looking good so far, keep us posted!!!

Nice looking build so far. But, I have to ask, why did you leave the inserts behind the pilots head rest out? Any particular reason? Thanks for the pics.

Thanks for the kind words guys
I left the area behind the headrest out only because I haven’t attached it yet, and since I haven’t done an aircraft built in almost 3 years i was kinda anxious to post a few pics (hence the little fuzzy hairs sitting on the nose ;)) As far as the engine cylinders, it was just some drybrushing of silver over gunmetal over black base color. The wings aren’t actually attached yet, just pressed onto the support stalks to show them with the fuselage.

Tomorrow I tackle the decals, detail and attach the landing gear, maybe pick out a bit more contrast on the pilot (eyes, etc.) and paint the canopy frames; I hope to have it completed by the weekend and completed pics added…

Again, Thanks
