1/48 Roden T-28B Trojan COMPLETE

Big fan of the trainers. This one started out great, but tonight I hit a paint compatibility issue. Here’s the WIP

Sub assemblies going along nicely. I used the prepainted eduard PE stuff and have mixed feelings.

Asssembly was a bit different, but after figuring it out it went together well.

Fast forward to painting - gloss white went on well. I used True North international orange which went on well and looks the part. Little overspray here and there but manageable.

Last step was to paint the flat black anti-glare. I masked with Tamiya tape which is rock solid in terms of bleeding etc. Then hit it with Tamiya rattle can flat black…Ugh…

Crinkled up over the orange and bled like a stuck pig.

I’m going to let it dry for a week or so and start to address the nasty issues.

I figure we should share our successes and our failures - this is a big turd! Sucks when the last step goes wrong. I’ll post my attempts to correct after this mess dries.

Yes, I completely agree with you. Wait a week and let dry while you step back and think about correcting the issue. Still, everything looks good to me sir!

I would guess that the reducer or thinner in the rarttle can was not compatable with the other paint. In addition it is best to not mix brands, or at least let the thinner in the fresh paint be allowed to “flash” off before applying another brand over it. The clear floor coating could also be used as a “barrier” to prevent a chemical reaction between the two brands. Just some thoughts.

After you take care of the wrinkles, and repair, after you mask and burnish down the tape, shoot a coat of clear over the edge of the tape to seal…should keep the bleed through on the edge to a minimum.

Looks good otherwise, hope you planted nose weight in it.

There’s a bunch of sinkers glued behind the engine. She’s heavy!

Oh no, that stinks! What do you suspect caused that?

Laquer over enamel I suppose.

Progress! Got the gear on - and touched up the bleed a bit and dealt with the crinkle issue. Still needs attention but coming along. Canopy looks good - though not glued down yet. Bit more work to do. I hit the panel lines with a pencil for a bit of contrast.

I’m sure you’ll be able to fix the paint issue. Looks great.

  • I’m glad you were able to fix that issue. l really like that paint scheme …[Y][Y]

Looks great. I like the T-28, especially in the Navy training schemes, e.g. chrome yellow and the insignia white and international orange as in your build. As a general note you can apply enamel over laquer, but not lacquer over enamel. I have used clear lacquer over Testers Model Master enamel but it was applied in very light coats and allowed to dry between coats. This generally gives you a rough surface but it can be cut and buffed (1200, 2000, 2500 sand paper wet sanded then polished with compound) . This is generally done for cars, but I have done this with a matt clear for aircraft. Testers clear lacques are not as harsh and work well for this.

The T-28 is a great old bird and has been in service as long as the B-52s.

Cleaned up the anti-glare panel a bit. Fiddley bits around the landing gear are a bit busy. I may need to touch up a bit here and there but making progress. BTW - I hate white airplanes

That looks fantastic! Add a little amount of black to just barely tint the white paint. It helps.

Interesting idea Toshi

Did some decal work tonight. Coming along

Looking really good !!

Thanks crown. It’s been an interesting build. Trying to keep my sticky fingers off the gloss white paint has been a challenge. LOL

oh yes, you have let that glossy finish dry. you must resist…

Waiting for the prop to dry. White tips in front, yellow on the back - probably the worst case scenario over black. Anyhow… I’ll finish this one up tomorrow

Really really nice! Super paint job even with the issues
