I was reading an interesting article in Air & Space about these a/c flying out of the Aleutians during WWII, and I was wondering if anyone knew of any kits of them in 1/48?
This is the only one I know of and I haven’t heard good things about Founderie Miniature.
knight667,
I have the F.M. PV-1 kit (two, in fact), and they are definitely NOT a beginner’s kit. The entire instructions sheet is on 2 sheets of paper! Being limited run, the fit is gonna take a lot of work. On the plus side, it has excellent resin and white metal detail set inscluded. Kind of pricey!
I also have the Academy Minicraft 1:72 kit, along with a Pavla resin interior detail kit that will build up into a really detailed a/c, much nicer than the F.M. kit.

Koster Aero Enterprises manufactures a mostly vacuform kit of the PV-1 in 1/48 (see link). But I imagine this would be even more of a challenge than the FM kit. I actually have the FM as well in my stash.

I agree, the FM kit looks like an advanced modelers kit. However, the kit is loaded with all sorts of goodies. If you find one, pick it up.
fm vs koster? my moneys on koster.
Classic Airframes also sells a Hudson in 1/48th (there’s one on Ebay right now). I guess it’s a pretty good kit, but be prepared to pay thru the nose

The Hudson and the Ventura are two different aircraft…
…and a friend of mine built the FM kit. He said he’d have rather stuck pins in his leg.
There’s a nice Ventura and a Harpoon available in 1/72…[whstl]
samething to me, and that’s what counts

While you are correct that what it is to you, is the most important thing, Hammer is right, they are not variants of the same model aircraft, but two completely different aircraft. The Hudson was a development of the civilian Electra, and the Ventura was a further development of the Hudson design, if I’m not mistaken. So, you’d have some work to do, to build a kit of one as the other. It would be like taking a B-17 kit and converting it to a Model 247. Related, but not same.
Hope that helps clarify!
The Naval version of the Hudson was a PBO-1, USAAF was A-29…
I just finished the Koster kit. Having never completed a vacuform before, it presented a few challenges, but was generally a fun build. I recommend it.
