1/48 Palm Trees

I need a few 1/48 palm trees for a dio that I’m doing… anyone know where I could get them? I’ve checked online stores like Verlinden, but I can’t find anything…

Thanks

From what I understand and seen people tend to scratch build them. paper and a stick from the yard. cut slits in the paper paint it and vula!

I’ve built mine from asparagus fern and wire trunks… Tedious, but quite doable… Also, there are some outfits that sell photo-etched palms, but I don’t know who they are off-hand… There’s also a mail-order place call Empire Hobbies that deals with foliage…

Asparagus fern huh Col.? got to try it …in the process of making some palms but struggling with the frons…started cutting real leaves from the yard…not happy with it though!

Note: Thanks to the US Navy, most of my frons need to be on the ground, blown from the trees!

Those are some good looking palm trees Stern0, how did you make the trunks? Just wire and paper?

Axel, Wire and floral tape…I think even masking tape will do. As i mentioned the frons are looking a bit lame…going to either try papper or some bigger leaves, hope this helps some…

I’m sure it’ll help, thanks! Please post more pics with the finished results when they are done [8-]

I’ve seen methods of scoring dowel rods with a Dremel tool that turned out very nice. Can’t really help with the frons, I know Verlin does some in PE

Steve- those look pretty good, can’t wait to see this new dio [tup]

Not sure if you’re just not there yet- but I think the top of the palm should have a bulb-type head that all the frons would have grown out of? Anyway- like I said, looking good.

Unfortunatley, Verlinden doesn’t make 1/48 palm frons, just 1/35 and maybe 1/72 [sigh]

http://www.scalehobbyist.com/catagories/Scenery_Construction/VER00000058/product.php?pg=1&ppp=24&sb=stocknumber&so=a&kw=palm this is what I was talking about, theres a big one and a small one. I have the kit and I feel like the smaller one could pass as the top of a 1/48 palm, but you’d have to scratch the trunk with a dowel or some wire/tape

I could definatley do that. Thanks Chris! Very much apreciated.

Glad to help Axel- you might also try (with the larger leaves) cutting them in half if you have no need for them, and using the forward half as extra leaves to thicken up the growth- depending on how big the leaves are and how they look in scale- as they are smaller 1/35 ground plants, even the larger leaves might not be too oversized for 1/48

Okay, as soon as i get some money in my budget, I’ll order a set and see what I’ll be able to do with them… Thanks!

Yeah, the stuff still looks pretty good, Sterno… If you want asparagus fern, it’s available at Hobby Lobby… So are the dried flowers that I use for other foliage, and the caspia branches for the evergreens…

Thanks Col. Ill have to look into that…cutting the leaves is a pain, you have to do em fresh or they get a little brittle…I saw a how to once and the guy cut ficus (sp) leaves…they were awsome!

I found some palm trees that’ll work in 1/48th today at Hobby Lobby… They come in this little “Desert Oasis” diorama kit from Woodland Scenics for kids for school projects and the like. The trees are also available separately… They’re not very good, the colors are just horrid and the tree-trunks too straight and not textured well, but they’d work well enough with some TLC and imagination on the trunk’s texture and adding some curve to 'em… They’d also have to be repainted but the fronds are quite good, and that’s the tedious part of those things… They’re between 6 & 8 inches tall and as long as you don’t put a B-17 next to 'em, they’d be ok as for the height. Think I’ll pick some up and see how they work…

Here’s a link to the kits… http://scenearama.woodlandscenics.com/items_DioramaKits.cfm/DioramaKits

Thanks HvH. I’ll check out that little oasis kit next time i go to hobby lobby. If i get them, I’m sure i could add a little life to them [;)]

Axel…finally got those palm frons to my liking…check em out on my Flamthrower up! Dio…gonna try to put a toot together for making the leaves…hope your having luck![:D]

Will do Stern0!

I found these on a google search:

and

they are made by Pegasus models. I have never built or seen a Pagasus model, does anyone know if they are any good? The kits are quite cheap, so does anyone have an opinoin?
