This was supposed to be my third Tamiya Mustang in a series of three (click to see Part 1 & Part 2) built as Lt. Col. Landers’ Big Beautiful Doll, but instead evolved to depict Lt. Abe P. Rosenberger’s mount. For some reason, the Alclad primer and paint kept lifting off of the plastic. I had to continuously sand and feather to keep the NMF as smooth as I could. It got to the point where I ended up deciding to cover most of the “NMF airframe” with paint and weathering in hopes of hiding most of the boo-boos. Anyway, decals for Rosenberger’s plane are included in the kit, so except for a TD resin seat, this is entirely OOB .
The paint’s Alclad and MM enamels. Weathering’s Flory washes and pastels. I figured I could dirty up this bird as an excuse to practice my weathering and painting skills. Please feel free to share your comments, critiques, and criticisms.

Looks wonderful! I love how your “practice” plane looks so much better than my “best effort” planes. Everything about your plane is so subtle and for me, that’s the best way to do it.
Ortiz, I agree! Aside from any mud, sand, or dirt one could actually put on the aircraft like armor guys…this is a very well-balanced weathered mustang. =] Everything is where it needs to be and nothing looks overdone here to me. I’ve never seen a radiator that messy before, but in no way have I seen it all. I’ve no doubt being that low to ground they do get dirtier. It looks quite convincing! I like it!!
I know you mentioned boo-boos, but this mustang looks cleanly put together to me. F’n A! =]

Hey bvallot, the picture below was my inspiration for a dirty bellied Mustang. Granted, mine is much messier, but I decided to use some artistic license to hide some of the Alclad blemishes.
AAAAaaahhhhhhh!! Nice! That’s perfect. =] I am aware of underwing surfaces becoming canvases for oil leaks and what have you…just hadn’t come across a really dirty radiator yet. Until now! =] This is a great picture to reference. I hadn’t actually seen an invasion stripe with a black lines outlining the whites before either. I might just have to tuck this picture away for referencing later O. =D

I’m with you. I like the invasion stripes with that outboard strip. I wish I could see the rest of the markings. I would’ve liked to have modeled this bird.
