Here’s my rendition of the Star of Africa’s 109F-4 W.Nr. 8693.
There’s no introduction needed for Hans-Joachim Marseille, an amazing pilot who racked up 158 victories against Western front aircraft.
Although this scheme is a popular one, it’s actually my first project with a desert Luftwaffe subject.
The build was relatively trouble free.
I used Mr. Color paints a Flory wash and light weathering with Tamiya acrylics and colored pencils.
The kit decals were OK but were not as opaque as they should be in some areas.
I decided to use the intact cross decals on tops of the wings rather than the tattered ones supplied in the kit and reflected in photos.
A sand colored wash was used for panel lines and rivets for most of the aircraft.
I used a darker wash for control surfaces and areas around the engine.
Overall, it was a fun build and a nice addition to shelf. Thanks for looking.
Comments and critique always welcome.
Excellent finish on your Friedrich Hoss! [t$t]
Thanks for the comments stickpusher and John. Much appreciated.

Beautiful Frederich Hoss. Can’t go wrong with the Star of Afrika’s machine. He’s on my future build list too.

Thanks LD. This was actually my first Luftwaffe desert scheme. I figured I might was well start with one of the yellow 14 109’s.
So, as usual, pure awesomeness. You’ve got great build quality, near flawless painting and weathering as well as some damn fine photography to make it all the more interesting to look at. Really the next level I’d like to reach.
Do you use a pin wash or the like on the canopy as well? You know, to accentuate the sliding portions that are otherwise not painted?

Yes, I did add a pin wash to highlight the unpainted edges of the sliding windows. In this case I think it was thinned black acrylic paint. Hope that helps. Thanks again.
Absolutely stunning work! The colors and weathering really make this kit stand out. Well done.

Forgot to ask - which colour mix did you use for the exhaust stains? I am soon to begin working on 1/32 Marseille’s bird hence the question.
Best,
Nikola

Hi Nikola - For the exhaust stains I used Tamiya acrylic flat black and red brown in various ratios with about 90% thinner. I started with 1:1 for the main stain areas, more brown on the edges and then more black in the center. Hope that helps.
