This time I would to share my latest project - the Supermarine Spitfire Mk. I (early) from RAF 19 Sqn. (F) - Duxford, 1938.
Made mostly OOB, with scratchbuild horn balance guard on top of the tail, and few parts from Edurad PE in the cockpit. The small oval window on the port side of the canopy is painted from mask.
I restrained weathering, since I belive that before war ground crew kept good care of their planes.
I’ve used mostly Pactra acrylic paints (I’m not sure, but I was told, that this is Testor/Model Master branch)
A115 RAF Dark Earth
A116 RAF Dark Green
The biggest problem was with the bottom - it is Aluminium in original. I was trying Mr.MetalColor Metalizer Aluminium, but the paint wasn’t sticky enough even after Metalizer Sealer and was easily peeled of with Tamyia Masking tape. So in the desperate end I decided to use Revell Enamel Nr 99 and it worked.
Wash was made with artist oil paints - mixed Burnt Sienna and Ivory Black
GREAT job on the Spitfire, Alseksander! Nice job on the weathering; just the right amount.
I too have always liked the Spitfire, such a timeless, classical beauty! I also like that even though there are a lot of Spitfires built, this early, two-bladed version is a nice change.
Keep up the great work and thank you for sharing with the rest of us!
Thank you friends for your opinions. I should say it was quite pleasant project (except bottom Aluminium painting [:D])
Vetteman42 - now I have also Spitfire Mk Vb on my bench (Tamyia 1/48), which I will finish as a short-winged bird. It looks, that this year will be for me a “Spitfa-year” [:D] - three more are waiting for their turn
Fine work, aleks. I particulalry like the oval window in the canopy. That’s difficult to do, and you did it very well.
It’s worth noting that the aluminium undersides are aluminium dope, not natural metal (the control surfacs are, of course, fabric-coated anyway. I use Testors non-buffing aluminium metalizer for this. Unless you’re using Alclad II, it’s always worth spraying metallic colours last. Even Tamiya tape seems to lift them.
I didn’t know that - I was sure, it’s bare metal underside (except comtrol surfaces of course) - thank you - one is learning whole life [:)]. Next time I will paint Aluminium on the end or use Alclad or Mr.SuperColor Metalizer
