1/48 Academy P-40C Tomahawk (Aka "Flying Tiger" ,Completed)

A simple but nice fitting kit from Academy

Nice clean build and subtle weathering. Did the decals give you any problems, being Academy?

Must be the week for P40s, mine is the B variant. Looks very nice, I like how you hi-lighted the panels and paint selection. Do you have an underside shot? BTW, I think the sight ring and aim bead should be switched.

Thanks. I know yr concern but surprisely, this kit decal is just nice. Not too thick and not too soft.

Thanks for yr reminder. It was a rush build of assemble , painting and finishing for only 3 days. But I think I just left it as it be since it was not a major concern for me.

As for the highlighting. I use post shading

Use carbon power make from dark pencil lead. Dip abit on to a brush and brush out the initial on a waste paper first until it achieved a soft tone before applying softly on the panel lines.

You can increase the intensity of the area according to yr preference by applying more strokes. For example the exhaust and machine gun area will be darker compare to other lines…

Wow three days, even more impressive. So did you “trace” all the panel lines as you could make them out after the base coat and did you apply a gloss before the powder mix? You did all post shading vs pre correct? I have never tried the pre shading technique, at this point I’m willing to try just about anything to get a better effect.

I can’t do pre shading cos I don’t own an airbrush. All my model works are by hand paint.

For quick job, I use pencil to trace all panel lines( Yes, it will look ugly when a near look) after painting and spray with matt coat.

But the trick comes in when you apply the powder shading to give them a shadow, fade and worn looking. One fantastic thing about this technique is you can erase all shading with eraser and water if you need a redo.

For a better done job, you need to apply wash on panel lines and slowly do the cleaning up which will take a whole day or more… then same post shading…

Something like this F-15 which has a darker/sharper panel lines but still retain the shading look.

Nice looking Mud Hen!

[Y][:D[ very nice good pics enjoyed.

Wow, you painted those with a brush? Nice job! [H]

Very nice work indeed.

This is one of those birds I build back in the 70’s as a kid and need to build again because of its historical significance and all the film / reading I’ve done on the flying tigers!

You did a fantastic job[Y]

Finished this kit about a month ago, really a nice build. Great fitting, satisfying build. Hard to beat the price too.

Decals were good, settled nicely, no slivering (a first for Academy for me), and faded nicely with a dullcoat.

Nice build you did there.

I completed the same kit a few months back with slight mods to turn it into a SAAF /RAF Kittyhawk. The value for $ with this kit is second to none. With a bit of effort it turns into a nice showpiece.

I also did some post shading on mine, but I used chalk pastel dust on the brown desert sceeme.

Very nice work.

[:D[ to the brush painters.

Did ya lose the canopy?[;)]

Thanks for all the compliment. I keep the canopy safe when doing photo taking ot it… [:D]

Spend some effort on the cockpit and wanted to do a open canopy version…
