how big are these planes? they must really be tiny!does the fuselage come in halves like the larger scale kits? are the wings in halves? what experiance have you guys had with them?
I’ve never seen 1/444 scale. Must be tiny, eh? Only built by dust mites.
I think you mean 1/144 scale…
WW2 fighters are SMALL in that scale, and since WW2 fighters are generaly about less than half the size of modern jet fighters, they get REALLY small… It’s more popular with large aircraft, like airliners and BIG military transports…
I don’t have any experience with them, simply because they’re too small (unless I were doing a forced-perspective shadow box diorama), and I don’t even do many 1/72 scale aircraft for that reason… I’m more “blacksmith” than “jeweler”, lol…
Can’t tell you exactly, but if you keep in mind that the scale means that one inch on the model equals 144 inches on the real aircraft, you can get an idea…
So for example… The F6F Hellcat has a wingspan of 42 feet 10 inches, that’s 514 inches… In 1/144 scale, if my math is right, that’d be a model with a wingspan of just over three and a half inches, or an F4F with a 38-foot wingspan, in 1/144, it’d have a span of just over three inches…
That small, I’d reckon that wings and stabilizers would be molded in one piece, also basing that on many of the 1/72 scale WW2 fighters I built as a kid were one-piece wing and stab moldings…
This is how small the are. The 2nd pic is next to the 1/48 version. It’s the scratched built bits that a small[;)]
Awesome, just awesome

Its a 144 scale Gb I ran at the start of the year, while their might not be alot to compare size/scale to it does show what you can do in this scale.

Who makes the 144 SBD Dauntless? I see the picture, but cannot find one via google.
Thanks.
Don.
How they come depends on the manufacturer - as does the level of detail. Some are exquisite, some are excreable, so check first before you buy a particular kit. I have done one 1/144 bomber kit, a G4M1 Betty from Minicraft, and the level of detail was … I’ll be charitable and say “soft,” but the kit was only $2 at Squadron so what the heck! That one was the traditional two fuselage halves and top and bottom wing halves, what you would normally expect.
My current project is a 1/144 Minicraft TBM Avenger, which has two fuselage halves but a single, solid wing and single stabilizer … and absolutely no cockpit detail (yeah, I know, you think I would have learned from the last one, but this was marked down at the local hobby shop).
With a little care and patience you can get very acceptable results:
Oh, and PS - wing_nut is the master in this Giant Penny Scale! [Y]
FSM has reviewed several of Platz’s 1/144 scale kits including the Hellcats and Thunderbolts and they have outstanding detail including sharp engraved panel lines and decals. I’ve seen but not built the Sweet kits and, despite the cartoony boxart, they are serious little models. And they’re about the right size to hang on a Christmas tree!
Christmas tree ornaments? Now that is a cool idea!
I switched to 1/144 because I no longer have room for 1/48 and am giving most away to friends and family. The 1/144 prop fighters are small but some do come with nice detail. The jet fighters are a little easier to manage and nice. I’m doing a Tu-95 Bear bomber now that has about a 12 or 13" wing span and later plan a B-52H, 747, E-3 AWACS, and an An-124 transport that is about 20" or so accross. I didn’t think I would like the scale but it really isn’t that bad. Plus, most don’t cost much so if I mess it up I don’t feel as bad if it gets tossed.
1/444 scale lol fantastic voyage scale thanks guys
I have never built any WWII in 1/144, just several modern jet fighters. They include an F-22, A-10, B-52, F-117, F-15, YF-23, and an SR-71. The jets are a challenge to me as it is and the idea of going smaller to some prop planes…
The builds can be a great success:
F-22
Or can be where things don’t go so well:
F-18
I have a bunch more waiting in the wings (no pun intended) to be built-some can be built in a weekend like somebody said.
'Tis the season! That would be one cool X-mass tree for shore! (Nove Scotia accent kicking in)
Here is a 1/144 scale 38(t)
