1/350 Trumpeter USS Freedom LCS

I received it for the Secret Santa GB gift and even though I have tones on the bench I always shove it all aside to build a gift.

So here’s the box art and I’ll get going on it today.

As typical, I’ll put it in a seascape.

Steve,

Given my total disdain for the LCS program, you should probably depict her being towed by another ship, possibly by an old OHP class frigate. That said . . . [:D]

Your Secret Santa did well in gifting you a model ship. You must be held in high regard! Merry Christmas!

Bill

LOL, thanks Bill.

I made an OHP for last years SS. It came out great, IMO [:D] and will try to do the same for the LCS. It’s a kit I’ve wanted for my collection for some time and was stoked to receive it.

I don’t know much about the program but never understood the need for a close to shore platform. It does look cool though, but I like the F-35 as well [:^)].

Santa is happy that you like it! [whstl] can’t wait to see it come together!

Well you get your wish Matt.

Todays progress. Loyt of PE and wee bits. I can’t believe I didn’t loose any on the floor.

Yet; It’s early in the build. [;)] Looks like a great start though.

Bob

Looking good Steve.

its all that Akagi practice, you’ll never lose a piece to the carpet monster again…cough [;)]

This model should give you a nice break from the Akagi Steve.

LOL you would think. I believe it has as much PE as the Akagi, just smaller.

I just never understood;

Why a whole nuther Ship with Differing metal problems when we have small ships in Reserve! With No Metal Problems!

That decision is way above my paygrade.

Because congresscritters want fat defence contracts in their districts, and don’t care if the produced thing “works” only that money was paid out in big scaks.

Nice add to the collection. Maybe we can sell them to Saudi.

Bill

Steve, what is LCS?

Littoral Combat Ship.

Littoral meaning the littoral zone

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Littoral_zone

I.E. close to shore. They are more or less very large patrol boats…with helo’s. Kinda take the Coast Guards duty but under DOT instead of Homeland Security.

I think they are cool looking and wanted one to build for quite some time. I would also like the trimaran USS Independance class.

Like I said, the decision to design and produce them is WAY over my paygrade.

I got quite a bit done to the LCS these last few days. The kit has an enormus amount of tiny parts, they look like cameras and speakers. Whatever they are, they take quite about of time to install.

The working theory was that you could buils a hollow ship, and fit in various modules to optimize it for whatever the needed mission was. And, since that covered all sorts of things like armaments and the like, the things would be cheap and eay to build. Also, since they were largely “empty space” they’d be fast, too.

Those last bits have been sticky wickets.

Also, having “mission modules” means having to have them all over the expected areas you are meant to employ the craft. And, there’s the issue of it’s never just the one mission at a time. The whole “we’ll bolt on what we actually need, later” is why they went with only a 57mm deck gun.

So, yes, unloaded they can go pretty fast, except when their powerplants break down. which has been more frequent than expected (they expected the one powerplant to be all things at all times). Also, fully loaded with a given mission module, they are quite heavier, and not quite as fast.

The tri-hull design would have been an excellent one to have used two powerplants, one for cruise, and the other for speed. But, no, that was not politle to the monohull design.

It will likely become the F-35 of the surface fleet.

Multi mission for all contingencies. Not feasible but a continuous unreachable goal. Everything to everybody.

Hey modelcrazy, at least you have a paygrade. I haven’t had a job since about March. If it wasn’t for my S.S. and disability check, we’d be so under water, you would need a sub to reach us.

Did you ever finish Akagi?
