Anyone got the Trumpeter 1/350 Prince Eugen?
What’s she look like, the new Academy 350th PE review I saw the plastic looked a little heavy and rough?
Thanks

Haven’t seen anything on a Prinz Eugen from Academy
I did look the new Academy Graf Spee over at the recent IPMS Nats. Perhaps you have them confused?
My impression of the Spee was that it looked rather toy-like. The deck planks looked to be 3 scale feet wide. Cleats and chocks were oversized and the molding just wasn’t crisp. It may draw some attention being half the price of the Trump Spee, but I think it doesn’t hold up in quality to the Academy Perry of their new Wasp helicopter carrier.
Pardon my ignorance…you absolutely right Ed.
Are they “sister” ships?
No, the Spee was a Pocket Battleship. Pocket Battleships were smaller than other battleships of the day. They were not as armored and had a higher speed. The sisters to the Spee were the Deutchland and Admiral Scheer. The Scheer was renamed Lutzow.
The Prinz Eugen was a heavy cruiser. It survived the war to be expended as a test subject during the Bikini A bomb tests. Sisters included the Hipper & Blucher.
Opps, edited due to Felix’ note
Ed, Not to be Mr. Know-it-all but I think you need to edit that Gneisenau sister ship thingee.
Academy and Trumpeter are producing identical 1/350 DKM ships?
Weren’t these done by Heller in 1/400(?) scale?
Gneisenau
Admiral Scheer
Lutzow
Graff Spee
Prince Eugen
Yes, Heller did produce those ships in 1/400. I had, at one time, all of them. They were for the most part very crude compared to modern offerings. It should be noted that those kits go back to the '60s and '70s and a lot has changed in all that time. I have seen some truly gorgeous builds of those Heller kits quite recently on Modelwarships.com for one.
The UPS guy just dropped off my new Trumpeter Prinz Eugen this afternoon and I have only just had time to inventory the parts to make sure they are all present. This kit includes some so-so photo etch (railings, platforms, ladders and funnel grill and some other bits) but the moldings of the plastic parts appear to be quite sharp with lots of detail. The decking includes plank ends and a mix of other types of deck coverings that appear to be well done. The kit also includes an S-100 Class boat as a bonus. Can’t tell you how well the bottom hull will fit 'cause I don’t care as I throw away the bottoms and only build waterline (a full hull model with a glowering red hull just reminds me too much of a baboon’s butt, besides, you will almost never see a ship any other way but from the waterline up anyway). First impression of the box contents is very, very favorable, as always, your mileage may vary. WS
Dreadnought, i’d take the lower hull & fittings off your hands if you are willing.
Well Dreadnought52 I am certainly glad the PRINZ EUGEN rates that well. I already have her and most of the ones mentioned and they are in paper at 1/200 scale.I counted at least a thousand parts and I think I missed some. I will use them,as usual ,as patterns for a build in plastic. I will probably buy the plastic model because I enjoy a good out of box build too. I do most this way because I need to keep my hand in, because I might get another client and the builds keep the old grey cells sharp. Some day I might actually get one completed. Most are at 50% and some at 80% but none at 100%. The wife needs her visits and she comes before the models. She asked the other day, do you still have a house full of boats?? I said you betchya!! She smiled and went back to la-la land. This is why I will tell anyone that will listen.Building models is fun, instructional, and relaxing. Don,t stop, build more!! Sorry, I got off track. As you build give us a heads up O.K.?? tankerbuilder
