1/350 Dragon USS Laffey Review/Preview

Back to looking at naval subject matter again this week with a look at the USS Laffey from Dragon in 1/350th scale.

AK Interactive has a nice set of paints for this. I think it’s called US Navy Camouflages #2 or something like that.

The Laffey was in Measure 21 as lost. That is 5N Navy Blue overall with 20B Weatherdeck Blue on all horizontal surfaces

AK interactive Naval Camoufpage 2 contains both these colors. Other manufacturers make these. Scale Colors makes acrylic version. While not named as such, Reaper Miniatures MSP paints makes a match

Enamel versions include Colourcoats, Tru-color, and now out of production ModelMaster

And not in Measure 11? 'm certain such things are written down some where.

Meas 11 would be slightly less monochrome.

Looking at reference photos of Laffey dated September 42’ does appear to have the darker Navy Blue of Measure 21. Was only able to find one photo of her in early 42’ as she was being fitted out which looks like it could be the lighter Sea Blue of Measure 11, but am not sure.

See shipcamouflage.com database of camouflage measures applied to us naval ships of wwii period

It seems like most USN WW2 destroyer kits in 1/350 represent a class that begins with an F; a Benson is a nice thing.

As the data base lists her in M21, I would assume she was painted that way at the time she was sunk.
