1/35 Technical WIP (pictures)

Yeah, I think It could be done nicely by laying down a base coat of whatever the vehicles primer coat is, then futuring that, and repeating my mistake. By no means a new technique, but it’s my first time trying it. Thanks for the comment!

Ian, this weathering looks outstanding! Absolutely perfect!

Amazing how a small mistake can render magic!

This is a real treat on the forum; something we rarely see, and executed very realisically! And that palm tree…stunning!

IanIs Your model looks great! From the pictures you posted I would add some dirt to the sides esp. around the wheel wells. As far as the rust I would leave it alone. It looks like a well used beat up truck. Keep up the great work, I look forwards to your future postings. Oh and by the way I lived in Arizona for a few years, 85 is a cool day, try 120 degrees. Of course here in Michigan 85 with 90 percent humidity will just about kill you [:(]

120!!! that’s insane man. My poor Irish skin would melt in 30 seconds. Thanks for the comments guys, and yup, I plan to add some dirt and lots of dust around the wheel wells mainly, and some dust in the bed. Also gonna add a couple AK’s and maybe an RPG piled in the back.

120! I’m with Ian, my irish skin would go from pastey to flash fried in a minute! I hear poeple keep saying “But it’s a dry heat”. Well I’v been thru there and it still was to hot for me. Heck it’s a “dry” heat in my oven and i’m not crawlin in there either!!

Ian keep it goin man. Loving the look. Your figure I see you went with more of a paramilitary/militia look. Looks good. When you started this project I kept picturing the guys wearing shorts and old Ocean Pacific/IZOD polos like in BHD. I like your choice!

Yeah, unfortunately, I couldn’t really find any sets hat would fit the T-shirt and jeans look, so I’m using a mixture. Some figure parts from ICM’s Mujahideen figure set which have some baggy middle eastern looking clothes with military vests, which I think will look fairly African with the Warrior Modern African Heads. I’m also using one figure from DML’s Viet coong set who has pretty casual jeans and a shirt. Last I’m using a couple bits I have lying around, with the thought it isn’t completely unrealistic that some of these men would salvage military equipment/clothing. I’ve found reference pictures of guys wearing just about anything, so I have some freedom here. I think I might even have the torso to a 'nam figure who has just a vest over his bare chest–that could look kind of cool.

Ian that paint and weathering is superb looking this is going to be a real winner, great recovery and interesting subject.

Ron.

Ian, I really like the effect you got with the chipping. Looks like some salvaged truck ready to wreak havoc. Well done man, keep it commin!!

Pat Covert(King of Rusty Auto’s), just uses the point of a scriber or new #11 hobby blade. Then carefully just kind of creates the cracks. I’ve done his method too. First time turned out horrid looking. Well it looked ok but not realistic in shape. Next time I used photo’s of broken windsheild glass to kind of use as a guide, and added some artistic license to it. Result was wonderful. It was a 62 Impala convertable, done up to look like some kid owned it, and it was kind of a beater and he was trying to put it back togethe Faded black paint, worn chrome, faded out red interior, busted windshield. Dirtied up the engine a bit and then painted over the grime to make it look like he/she was trying to make it look a bit more presentable. Put some decent wheels on it and a few other parts to look like he/she had already been at it. Too bad the model went buy buy before i got my digital camera. Cat got ahold of the model, along with about 13 others. My entire collection. Lets just say SUPER KITTY. No I didn’t harm the cat, but I wanted to.

Michael

Thanks guys! I think I’m gonna go back and use the method I’ve seen Biffa use with a tiny chunk of a green “scrubby” sponge coated in paint, and dab it around the chips, to make them look a little rougher and more flaky, as opposed to long smooth srips of missing paint like it has now.

very good looking rover mate! cant wait to see completed pics!

are there any of those landrover kits floating around? Would love to get hold of a couple to do some aussie landies!

Looks good, except I would have left off the driver and passenger windows. I imagine they would have been rolled down and left down in the envrionment the vehicle would have been used in.

Two of you are from Vermont? I’m a native Vermonter, born and raised in Springfield (yeah, the place they chose to premier the Simpsons movie). My parents just retired and left town two years ago (for FL). I still have VT plates on my cars.

Thanks guys, you’re right Rob, didn’t think about he windows. I practiced cracked and bullet “spider web” effects on extra clear pieces but wasn’t satisfyed. I’m still painting details like tail lights, and then a dust coat will follow. Grimmo, if you check ebay periodically you should fin sometihng. Just search “1/35 Land Rover” Right now there are about a dozen of the tamiya version which doesn’t have the top, it’s the military version, or you could scratchbuild the top section. They’re pretty cheap too, some of them are going for around $10 plus shipping. Good luck!
