1/35 Tamiya Tiger 1 Late Version

Hi all

Finally can post my last piece of work for year 2007, a 1/35 scale Tiger 1 Late Version.

After much research from the net and whatever I can accross, I have decided to build a Tiger from the sPzAbt 505 somewhere in Summer 1944, Eastern Front. (Or something near to the real thing)

What I have used in the building process are the Tamiya 1/35 LAter ver Tiger 1 kit plus a photo-etched kit for the kit. This is the 1st time doing some chipped painting, somehow still could not get the hang of it. Without further ado, here is some of the photo shots of the completed kit with some of it’s crew:

Here is the link for the rst of the pictures.

Any comments/feedback is appreciated!

Looks great, like your weathering. What did you use for the zimmerit?

Nothing like a nicely weathered Tiger. I love the battered skirts and the chipping and ageing looks sweet from what i can see. Is it just my PC or are the pics a little dark? Any chance of a few more a bit brighter?

Great build though. [tup]

…Guy

Thnx for posting! Nice build. The muzzle seems to have excessive blackening however. Maybe check wartime photos to see how much for your next project?

Thanks guy, in fact, the pics looks ok and bright on my PC. Tell you what, will re-post some pics under better lighting after the new year. Sorry about the poor pictures.

I use the tamiya quicl type putty and a AFV zimmerit roller for the job. Refer to my earlier posting of the king tiger thread for reference. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the head up!! Will note that in my future build!

To all, thanks for your kind comments.

Very nice zim work. I’ve got to give those AFV rollers a shot, they seem to be effective and realistic. Someone brought up dark pictures, and in mine, the faces of the crewmen do look a bit dark. Some more closeups would be appreciated.

While the battle wear and tear is well executed, I have a few suggestions:

I pretty sure that the figures should have black garrison caps, not gray. The piping should be armor pinkish red as well.?

One of the biggest problems with dark washes is they make the tank a little too dark. I think this is the case with your build IMHO. The effect could be enhanced by the low light photography.

Also, I believe 505 vehicles should have a pale yellow band behind the call numbers on the tube: Here is a third company tank, the concensus is dark yellow and red brown:

I think next time I would go with a little less “wash” …

regards,

Steve

Nice zimmerit, along with nice interior hatch detail [:)]

katootsv2,

If this is your first time with chipped paint, consider it a success! If you get the chance, get your hands on a book by Osprey Publishing called “Modelling the T34/76” It has EXTENSIVE info on chipping paint technique…fun tank to build too…I just finished mine. I would also go to a local model contest and study other work…if you’re lucky enough talk to the modeler of a project you want to emulate.

Your work on the barrel, near the turret is superb, the tracks are excellent, and the spare treads on the turret are also really nice. What distracts me are the figures. They are too shiny, faces are off, too many, static poses, too similar in the poses, placement is in a “square”…can’t quite put my finger on what it is…Please don’t take this wrong, I struggle with figures too, faces ESPECIALLY, and I applaud your effort. FYI: rule of thumb, always use an odd number of figures 1, 3, 5…

Go ahead and display that one with pride!!!

The thing about figures that come with kits is that they look like little schtup’s, with those goofy stare-eyed faces and stiff poses. I’ve always tried to keep the number down to some crucial bit of story telling and I lop their heads and limbs off so I can modify them to more realistic poses.

Finally, I NEVER try to paint white eyes with iris, pupils and so on in 1/35 scale. The end result is a goggle-eyed zombie in miniature. Simply make a depression with a drill bit and let a wash run in.

@ dahut & SMJmodeler, your feedback on the figures is very valuable to me. Yes, did pick up a trick or two from here. Will keep a mental note on my future build on the 1/35 figs.

@ Steve, a big thanks for the reference and the field cap colour. Somehow I think that I got mixed up with the infantry field cap. As for the wash, I fully agree to use less “wash” for future build.

@ tigerman, more close up comin’ right up after the new year!

Thanks again to all for your comments and feedback!!! Really appreciate it!
