1/35 Hobby Boss M4 High Speed Tractor

First work in progress thread on here… Been building this for a while. NIce kit that I am making a few changes based on photographic evidence (of the heavier M4 HST) and other builds

  1. replacing kit seat cusions with miliput - better size/shape to reflect the originals padded nature
  2. replacing the kit doors (too thick) with tissue doors (this is experimental but looks like 2 sheets of 2 ply with either cling film or freezer bag windows)
  3. adding a wooden “extension” (vertical) to the rear stowage compartment
  4. adding a spare halftrack front wheel on the rear
  5. adding some smll extras to the engine

so some images:

Oh cool, nice work! Great job there on superdetailing the engine.

Great modifications! I have the same kit in stash, and am looking forward to your progress.

I’ve been following this build over on Armorama. Nice to see that you’ve joined up here also to share.

thanks all… just placed on, and wood grain isn’t very obvious but have added the wooden “riser” to the rear. Just the cushions to do then it can be sent to the paint shop - doors are also in progress

Looking good. Very nice work on the engine. I look forward to seeing some paint.

thanks… paint will wait mostly because I have 3 others in line for weathering and also big upheavel here this week - son is off to University!!!

I really must be bonkers… well 6 doors done… and boy are they thinner than the plastic kits. I will fold them all open so should look OK… this was 2x two-ply tissue and then clear freezer bag for the windows…

What can I say but Wow! I know what you’re saying about uni upheavel. My, (U.K.), neice’s daughter is off as well but apparently there’s dramas over transport issues because of Covid.

yep only one person can accompan my son in to his accomodation (that will be his mom) but I will drive down and “lurk” outside. Car is going to be crammed with stuff…

today’s soft furnishing work was cushions. Kit ones were just boring plastic whereas in real life the seat pads were stuffed with blankets etc. This leads to a more “random” arrangement which I have tried to convey. Do need to add seatbelts as well but this now means this can go to the paintshop (might get to prime her next weekend)

Like those seats. I built that kit to match up to a howitzer it towed.

Great work. Can’t wait to see some paint.

no photos but build done… I might get time to prime it over the weekend if I am lucky (son off to Uni Thursday so will need to gauge the mood in the house before modelling)

Just remember mate, happy wife, happy life!

yeah and the amoubnt I have spent on modelling stuff this week I need to keep her happy  (2x new kits (1 loaded with AM goodies), some glue, priner and paint)

Hey, whilst I have continued to pick up kits and magazines over the past 10/15 years, I’ve really only dableled in figures, so my purchases have been minimal. Now I’m back and I’ve joined these forums I want to know about all the new stuff, pigments, PE , special paints, etc, etc. so the other day I spent 700$ Aussie dollars on such stuff. Ive been cooking dinners and doing housework ever since to re-build my brownie points! This comes to you live from the doghouse…

hahah i wasn’t as bad as that but pushed my luck for now…

not a big figure painter (the odd onewith Tamiya kit) but I have a Wespe coming in that is just calling out for figures - just don’t know which ones (Miniart do an SPG set that is tempting)

Love how she looks Rob, looking forward to the finished photos!

thanks all… .NOW the build is complete (well apart from probably having to source replacement tracks - HobbyBoss ones just woot stick with anything (even heat!) - may have to resort to a staple!!!

anyway, done some titivation this afternoon (better securing of the spare wheel, external support for the additional height at the rear and stowage (combination of Value Gear, Redog and AFV fuel cans). it does come out and is in 2 halves to allow for easier painting.

Hmmm;

I remember when I first met this neat machine. I bought the REVELL " Long Tom" and the High Speed Tractor kit. That one couldn’t hold a candle to this one for detail!

I have built probably dozens for all kinds of stuff. Even converted one to Eight Wheel drive instead of treads.

I am definitely going to follow this build!

Very cool, love all the added details for that ‘lived-in look’. [Y]
