1/24 Mr Bean's Mini WIP.

I am building a 1/24 scale Morris Mini Cooper 1275S Mk.1 for my friend as a Christmas gift.
I will show some of my WIP pictures as well as a few of my reference photos. I am going to try and make it as close to the image as I can, including the mismatched yellow paint on one of the doors and the dead bolt lock on the door.

the concept photograph

The kit is going to be done without the actuial Mr Bean himself, since there is no 1/24 scale mr bean, and a stand in figure wont do.

The car itself hasent been started, but the accessories have been, here is a look

The Kit

The TV box and the Deadbolt

To make the card board box in scale what I did was…
I got a piece of computer paper, folded it half horisontally (standing as it would in a printed) I then unfolded it, slathered it in white glue, and folded it again. When it dried it was thick and very stiff. I then proceded to fold it into the shape and cut the areas to make the flaps fold. Once I did that I glued it in the box shape, but left the flaps unglued. I folded them like you do a card board box to keep it close without taping it (you know what I mean) and semi glued those down. I then put some masking tape cut thin over it on a part or two, to simulate packing tape. Then, simple brown airbrushing.

The WIP of the Deadbolt

I love my luck. I’m thinking, how am I going to make the lock itself? I go to plug in my dremel, to try and make the little thiny thin parts of the hanging lock, and I see this!

I glued one strip of syrene on the other, one slightly smaller on all sides.

When it dried I used my flat file to file a grove, as you can see on the referance pic. I then used my dremel to square it up and put the grove on the sides as well.

Then using a diffrent head I drilled a hole in the side (which is really the bottom, but how it sits its the side)

I then used gorilla glue (only super glue I have, it serves it’s purpose) to attach the lock to the deadbolt.

NEXT STEP is to make a mask of a logo that says “TV” like is on the box in the reference shot.

Now, I do have a question. This kit is a solid body for the car body… but if you see the pics the front has some… damage to it, from hitting a certain blue regal reliant supervan III a few times. How can I simulate that damage?

Honestly, Steve–my first thought was "…and this is the guy who says he can’t scratchbuild an armchair?!"

That box looks great!

Mr Bean RULES!!! He’s HILARIOUS! I love his “Singing in Church” skit LOL!

This shold be a fun build to watch! I’m sure you could find figure who approximates ROland Martin?! It wouldn’t be hard to modify one to look like him?!

You had the name almost right, its Rowan Atkinson, but I wont hold that against you.

As far as the arm chair, I said I didnt have the skillset, I never worked with any kind of modeling putty or epoxy, the kind of thing for adding to a model. Nor do I have any, didnt mean I wouldnt have if I had the stuff.

As far as the box, I had used that technique with the bandage of the arm of my Soviet tank commander figure. So I knew how the glue would work. As I said before, I think, When it comes to modeling, im a quick learner.

The reason Im not after a figure, is his face is extremly unique, especially as the Bean character, the facial expressions were alot of the character, that and my friend who this is for is a MASSIVE bean fan, and hed know it wasnt right. So would I to.

As far as the chair and the figure moding go, its best to put it this way. This is a gift build, not an expermentation build, I want to do this how I know, to make it as perfect as I can.

EDIT ON MAIN POST, I FORGOT THE {/img} TAG ON THE BOLT PICS

Steve , the episode you are modeling is hilarious, but if you did try to make the recliner/armchair THAT WOULD BE AN AMAZING MODEL BUILD.[(-D]

I LLOOOVVVVEEEE MR. BEAN!

Knew a guy like him while growing up, makes me remember the other guy and laugh MAO

Cedric

Hey, a build of Mr. Bean’s car getting run over by the Chieftain Tank would do in both Auto and Armour Catagories. Wasn’t there a kit of a 1/25 Chieftain Tank out once?

I dunno but at that scale it would be Expensive I would suppose.

Looking pretty good… As for the damage, it looks pretty subtle if the front right area under the headlight is what you are talking about. I think the best way to represent that would be to sand the dents in with a sanding stick or a file. Then you just need to polish the plastic a bit before you paint to get the big scratches out, and you’re left with some good looking dents.

Hmmm, well Doog mentioned using a soldering iron to soften it and denting that way, I have a few crap junker kits i will try diffrent methods on (the body isnt that thick, so sanding might not work)

I think he will notice the diff between your model and Mr. Bean’s car, "a late 1970s MK IV British Leyland Mini 1000".

If you check the Front the grill, bonnet, lights, etc are very different as well as the hood symbol.

He will appreciate it, but there is quiet a lot of differences between the Mini models and the makers of them. I know because my wife is a Mini Nut.

I tried to model one but settled on giving her the Corgi die-cast.

Building a Model of the Mini she owned was bad enough as there was no model even remoetly close to it.

As for bend fenders, etc I have used Incese sticks to heat the plastic from the inside to soften it enough to bend. Thining first will make the process quicker.

Thanks zen, I know it isn’t perfect, but It will have to do, its the closest I could get (I couldnt find the exact build of mini bean had.

I am going to try and mod the hood ornimant symbol so it looks more like the one on bean’s mini though.

As far as this mini goes though, its less the model version and more the distinct yellow and black pattern, plus the deadbolt on the door and such that makes it his mini (he had a few diffrent ones through the series all posing as the same car.)

He had 2 cars first got trashed during 1st episode. My wife is a Mini and Mr Bean fan.

Either way it is your call.

Personally I would watch out for the fuel intakes, door hinges, bumpers, tail-lights, etc as those are major.

Don’t worry about the windows, bonnet length, etc as they differ between models.

Either way your friend will appreciate it. If you want refence pics holler.

I won’t post any pcis featuring the missus though

Myself don’t recall a Sherman in 1/24 or 1/25, know they did a Challenger I though

Forgot, if you can get hold of the TVC-15 Mini’s they are very close.

Said that they are resin and kinda hard to get hold of.

Only company I know that did the hatch-backs, Mini-mokes, etc in a decent scale.

See what you made me do now.

I pulled my Mini-model out(same as yours) and now need to finish it.

But I will do mine diffrently with the flag painted on the roof, not sure which country yet. My decal set has a few choices.

Will add wiring to the engine too. Using this build as a testbed for somet techs I want to use on the Rally Mini (got all the upgrade/AM parts for it too).

After looking at the stash I found I have about 15 Mini models even the rare ones like the Mini-moke and AutoBianchi Mini(Italian version).

My vote goes to the canadian flag

Well, its now october… I havent started yet… HOLY CRAP I need to get to work on this thing. I have the next 4 days off (we dont get ‘murduring, raping, pillaging, enslaving explorer day’ off, its a preview day, so they give us the thurs and friday after off.

I am going to start working on it, it doesnt look like it will be to hard, so ill post some wip shots as I go along.

I had to work myself, but I didn’t whine about it and I didn’t make a disparaging slur about someone who’s been dead for 500 years.

Nice buildup though, I myself have always wanted a Reliant Regal ! ( the three weeled car)Ever since I first saw the Video by Golden Earring “Radar Love” in the early 80’s - Now that is a cruiser for picking up the ladies [(-D]

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nIA4gcrk-50

the reliant regal was quite the car… heh (as far a columbus goes, he did come over here, rape, murdur and enslave the people he found, dont let anyone tell you different)

smeagol, with respect to your feelings about Columbus–which I agree with, by the way–that’s completely irrelevant to your build going on here, and won’t do anything to encourage responses about your model here in this thread…there’s other blogs and forums for political commentary…just something to think about?

Im not gona hash it out or anything ill stop it here (and its history, not politics)
