1/150, scratch build, spaceship, ADLIB-1

Inkjet ink has been a scam since its invention. The printers are presently sold as “loss leaders” simply as a mechinism to sell ink. When a three-in-one printer barely breaks $100, but replacement ink is $40-60, the economics get to be very obvious. The print heads are also hugely wastefull of ink, too. But, that gets “up” time, which consumers insist upon.

Sad truth is that color toner (sometimes called “laser”) printers, even at three times the entry price are far cheaper to operate. (Replacement color toner cartridge runs about a c-note, but prints, reliably, about 6-7 times as many pages as inkjet.)

Downside for “us” is that far, far fewer decal films are compatible with color toner versus inkjet (with the codicil that the best decal tech is from dye sublimation printers–which are both the best color printers, and the priciest option around).

For persons not in Commonwealth nations a “biro” is a comoon pen, in the US, we’d probably call it a Pilot Point. Although, in common usage it often refers to a ballpoint, e.g. a “bic” pen.

The creatiity on this remains without parallel.

Thanks guys for your feedback and sharing your knowledge. I am learning from you all.

I am still in recovery but feeling much better.

Found an old pair of polarized sunglasses. Things can be done with the lenses. Plan to use a servo motor to rotate the bottom lens up to 90 degrees. Also to use a pair of ultrasonic transmitter and receiver components for determining distance of an observer approaching a window. As the observer gets closer, the widow lens gets brighter. This may startle the observer, for it will indicate that ADLIB-1 is alive and curious too, as if looking back at the observer.

Good to hear you’re feeling better Peter.

The polarised lens idea looks cool, looking forward to seeing how you put it in action.

Those photos make me want to go scrounge a gaming CP’s power supply with a clear red fan. Then spin the thing slowly to see if that will “pulse” the color.

Just a thought at this point.

The ideas just keep coming.

Thank you Gamera.

That’s it. That is what I do. Experiment, experiment and experiment.

Some experiments blow up in your face, others fizzle out, and many do blossom. The more experiments done, in life, the less likely they become bummers, and more frequent are the successes. Those that blossom more often than not introduce further insights and ideas to experiment on. One’s confidence increases and larger risks are taken. For instance. I am moving ahead with this particular compartment with little idea of how it will turn out, but personal history, of many experiments, tells me it will turn out okay. As a result, I soldier on, piling up the hours of work, towards something unseen. It requires an act of faith. Modellers have lots of it.

As just posted, I am carrying on with uncertainty. Just like starting a blank canvas. In this case a white sheet of plastic. I know that a transformer is to fit on this sheet, but little else. I decide to cover up the circuit board with yellow paint. About three coats were applied. During each application I was hoping some ideas will arise as what to do next. All that came to mind was to add warning stripes around it, and a red flashing symbol. Ah, the blank sheet is starting to weave a story…

Floor above the Drive Room - the area which feeds energy to the power plant below.

The Drive Room floor.

It makes for an interesting journey and I can’t wait to see where this takes us. Glad you are feeling better too. Carry on!

That is quite the quote. Very nice.

Oh that’s neat!!!

Sometimes the best trips are the ones where you start out with no idea where you’re going and just let the road take you somewhere new- same with your project here- just let the winds blow you where ever they take you!

Thanks Bakster

Thanks

That is true. Sometimes that upsets people when you suddenly don’t do what they expected or hoped for.

Will be leaving this model for a while. Need to do some more on the others. Will return to this one shortly. Thanks for following.

that engine room makes a nice little mini-diorama (and i actually like the exposed led wiring. form & function! Nice that you’re having fun with it.

Thank you for visiting this build and encouraging response. Much appreciated.

Peter: Are you still working on this? Been two weeks and I hope you haven’t dropped her- I really want to see how she turns out!

Been ill, on and off, for several weeks, with an internal organ infection. Anti-biotics has finally cleared it up (fingers crossed). Have slowly started to get back into modelling again. However, my focus had to follow a priority, which is the Bridge diorama. So, I will be working on that instead of ADLIB-1. Will come back to this one in a few months time.

Ouch, that sounds nasty- glad to hear you’re doing better!

Sure, no rush. I just want to see how you finish her up!

Hello Peter,

Just discovered this one. Very cool. I like the journey so far, the intrepid attitude, and of course, the fantastic work. Hope all is well with you.
