1/144 scale Aircraft

Does anyone Model the scale 1/44 ? If so , do you model them due to space limitations or budget wise ? Myself I cant model below 1/72 without two sets of magnifacation [sigh] Would like to see some pictures of your finished builds.

Hi Summit!

I do it for those two reasons you mentioned: budget and space (in no particular order). Sometimes if I finish a huge kit like a B-36 or a 1/48 B-29 or kit with a zillion parts like an Accurate Miniatures Avenger, all I want to do is take a break and build something small and quick. It sort of reminds me and puts me back in that mindset of why I got into modeling in the first place: for the sheer joy of it. The thing I love about many of the Revell kits in 1/144 is that they’re small and simple yet they still have wonderful detail. On top of that, I sometimes derive more satisfaction out of purchasing five or six kits for $7.00 each rather than one kit for $60.

For my particular tastes, 1/144 kits are perfect subjects to mount on a small wooden base. That way I can either keep three or four on my desk at work or I can give them away to loved ones.

I think they’re great and I hope the manufacturers keep coming out with more subjects. I wish there were more aftermarket decal sets for them, too

Too small for me. For my tastes 1/72 is too small for fighters, I like 1/72 for bombers and that is mainly due to space,

I agree with Eric but my difference is that I will get a Lindberg or one of the easier Revell 1/48ths to take the break after a more difficult kit.

Eric thanks for the Great Reply. I have a couple older 1/144 kits in my stash that you can Have if you want them ! I will never build them.

I build a few 1/144 kits here and there, but they tend to be large aircraft that are available only in that scale, like airliners. A Boeing 707 in 1/144 is still over a foot long… not that small, really!

I will occasionally build something other than an airliner or large transport in 1/144 if it grabs my attention. I’m going to be building a 1/144 Minicraft PBY for the upcoming PBY group build. Squadron had it recently for about three dollars so I thought, “why not?” Even the PBY is relatively large, it’s still going to come out to about the same size as a 1/72 fighter.

When it comes to building smaller aircraft - like fighters - in 1/144, I have to admit, I haven’t tried, and I don’t see any reason to, really… unless I was looking for an interesting challenge. There are modelers who get amazing results in this scale, and I have the utmost respect for their patience and attention to detail!

I’ve done a couple. I used to work at a place that made cables for aircraft and I built a few kits of aircraft that we did cable for to show the non-aircraft minded folks what we were working on. One was a C-5. 1/144 is (or was at the time) the only available kit so I built the Entex version of it.

Then, to show how giant it was I had to build a couple of others. Here’s a Dragon F-18. The company folded before I got that one finished - the defense cutbacks of the early '90s did the place in.

I’ve got a few more in the stash. I recently picked up the F4F and Hawker Hurricane by Sweet and they are…sweet!

Summit! Bless you! I will send you a PM…

Eric - Sent one back to you

Dave Thanks for Posting the Pics. Wow you did a Fantastic Job on those. I cant even imagine painting the tires much less gluing them in place [:-^]

I think they’re really neat. The one’s shown lately around here are the best I’ve ever seen.

I’ve only built two… and they weren’t of large planes either. (the Me-163 and Me-262) They were excellent models. I cannot remember the brand, but they were both in one box.
