So while building AMT’s AC-130H, I decided to go also participate in the Gundam Group build(Summer Gundam RX-78 Group Build - #42 by NucMedTech). I have build Robotech/Macross models, yet not a Gundam so I thought this would be a fun side build since the gunship is a paint the butt.
I went ahead and primed and painted the colors even though it was molded in color, so here you go and enjoy!

All right, go Mustang! I am hoping a lot of guys get their kits finished so we can see a parade of Gundams at the end!
I was talking to a guy over the weekend about Gunpla in general, and he felt the latest kits are a different modeling experience compared to “scale” kits. He was originally a car modeler from a long time ago and felt that the newer pre-colored kits did a really good job of getting the completed model to look good right out of the box, compared to a car kit from years ago.
While I agree that is indeed the case, I have always painted my models, so I do not see any difference in building a Gundam or airplane. But yeah, building a Gunpla kit is more fun and WAY less stressful than an airplane or tank!
But Gunpla wasn’t always so user-friendly. There was a time when you had to glue all the non-color separated parts together with a tiny tube of glue that came with the kit. Behold, the Dinosaur Age of Gunpla:

Added these to the Gundam Group build but a small update. I am putting this together along with another build which is why it is going so slow.
Had the chance to work some more on this build. Actually a lot of fun to build, definitely learning what needs to be done if I ever make another one on what needs to be painted and not painted.

So, finalized the painting and building of the body. Just need to add the hands and decide on the weapons. Since there are no decals or stickers for the exterior, I will be gloss coating next and then do some weathering. I ran into an issue with the head which means I had to strip it and will have to do a repaint.

Guess this would be the home stretch. Done with the painting and I fixed the head for the Gundam. Other than some touch ups, I will be moving on to the gloss coat for some light weathering and then sealing it for final display.

Going to call this one done. Great experiment on building my first Gundam kit. Will definitely do some things differently when I build another pre-painted Bandai kit, but now I know what to expect. Very enjoyable build.
