1/12 Wright Cyclone Engine

It’s been quite some time since I’ve built anything and decided that a large scale kit would be easy on the aging eyes in helping me get back to constructing. I had purchased this kit from the Old Model Kits site a long time ago, always intending to build rather than “collect”. After completing it, I find myself wishing that there were more engine kits. They are, after all, the absolute heart of what made the biggest difference in the life and death struggles in the air.

I used Model Master paints, gunmetal on the cylinders/heads, dark gull grey on the crankcase/supercharger, IJN green on the magneto, aluminum on the rocker shafts and intake runners, dunlkegrun for the oiltank, and a gold/aluminum/gunmetal mixture for the prop shaft and the ignition ring and high tension lead, as well as the dry brushing on the cylinders/heads, bronze on the prop bushing, armor sand on the ignition wires/coils.

As you can see, two of the ignition wires popped loose from the rocker shaft attachment points. I would recommend that anyone doing this kit put a little heat to them to contort them as there is a stiffness to them. The dullcoat did a bit of a number on the engine stand, but all in all, I’m pleased with how it turned out.

Thanks for looking in. Any constructive critiques and/or suggestions are welcome. Thanks for looking in.

Regards, PWB.

That’s nice, I like the look of that. It would be nice to see some more of these large engine kits. I just finished a 1/18th scale engine, will post some pics later.

Nice work there. It looks great.

This is fantastic. =] I would more than love to try one of these out. Thanks for putting something else on my “to-do” list.

Is it all resin or plastic? Any other parts made from something other medium?

It’s a straight out of the box, all plastic Monogram, 1983 issue.

That looks right on. [Y]

Now you have an ideal reference when building any scale aircraft that used this engine.

Jack

i gotta find one of those

that looks great!

Beauty! Now all you need is a little pool of oil underneath it for added realism.
