Project I am doing as a bit of a spite build following this past SCGMC and not placing yet again. Saw one there that inspired me so I am working on my own. Have a couple ideas on the paint scheme but nothing finalized. I do however have the posing figured out. Will just need to get a MG stand though. I am also thinking about replacing the funnel cannons with longer metal ones.
Off to a great start on this one Chris. Looking forward to seeing what you’ll be doing here bud.
Liking what I see so far!
Small update tonight, mainly did some paint experimenting. Tried using one of the SMS Color Shift paints that I have, orange to yellow, that i thought might be a possibility for some of the detail parts.
The one on the left is with a white base and the right a red base. Do think the one on the right is the better of the two, but not sold on the color. Would like some opinions on it.
I’m thinking the one on the right just for the fact that it’s a good contrasting color Chris.
Hi Chris,
Difficult for me to give an informed opinion when the other colors it will be displayed with are unknown. For myself I’d like to have a better idea of what other general colors are planned for the build as well as where this would fit in the overall scheme of the piece. That’s asking for quite bit. So as a general observation I agree with Mustang that the one on the right stands out more. If that fits your purposes go for it!
Yeah thats where I think I may have to figure that out. Thought it would be easier to get this color selected since there are only a couple parts that would be it.
Chris, curious to see what main color you choose!
Bandai should give us all a MG Qubeley 2.0. The original kit is quite old and could use some updates, like angled-in torso sides and more robust binder supports. Plus the forearms have those rectangular versus correct oval recesses, which are hard to correct.
Or a MG mass production Qubeley! Ah, but that would probably be Pee Bandai.
Chris,
20 years ago, Gunpla in the US was very different from today. Back then, people were mentally stuck thinking that you only had to snap them together and put on the stickers. They did not realize the guys in Japan had been extensively modding their kits since the early 1980s.
Today in the US, the armor and figure modelers have weighed in, bringing their talents to Gunpla. Thanks to them, competition is a lot tougher now! Not only do you have to glue, putty and paint your kits, they have to be finished exceptionally well to be a contender in a contest.
So yeah, even I have to acknowledge that the Gunpla category has become challenging. You gotta run really hard to keep up with the crowd, It’s just like entering a Sherman tank or P-51 Mustang now. As Rodney Dangerfield famously said “Oh yeah, it’s tough I tell ya, really tough!”
I look forward to seeing what you have planned to meet these guys!
That works. About half the time when I start the painting there’s some minor part of the model that just screams a particular color at me. So it becomes the starting point for rest of the color palette of the build. If working up the color scheme is proving to be particularly challenging I’ll start placing dabs of color on scrap to compare against each other to help me visualize how they’ll work together.
Good luck!
Spoons my friend, cheap and without a doubt probably the best to use for testing colors
They are indeed, but sometimes you just need a little bit to compare against.
So fairly large progress update today. First off I spent the majority working on the wings and getting those cut out. However i did do some planning.
While i was cutting these parts out, the inner wing detail, i noticed these three circle areas that seem like they are supposed to be thrusters. Since there is sufficient room to do it I am thinking of drilling them out and replacing them with better looking thruster bells. Not sure if they will be recessed or if i will attach them into the opening and extending them. Will play around with it. I also did figure out i will go with a dark metallic for these parts, leaning towards darl aluminum from Alclad but will test a couple maybes as well.
With that done I get the wings cut out and assembled.
Feel extra motivated and with only a tiny bit left I powered through the last couple parts needing assembly and attached the wings and arms. At this point assembly is done and breakdown for painting can begin. I will also double check which action base i will need to get while doing this.
This looks pretty darn cool so far Chris. I’ve never built in the Gundam genre of modeling before, but I have a whole new appreciation for it after seeing all of the color schemes and weathering that I have over the past couple of years of following multiple works in progress.
In the hands of an experience modeler these kits are a blank canvas waiting to be turned into art. Its one of the reasons they have gained in popularity as they allow for near infinite creative expression.
I will also add I do when I can encourage Gundam modelers to build traditional subjects as a means of growing in their craft. When you have something that you can directly reference for how weathering and finishes should look it goes a long way to perfecting your skills.
wow. this very beutiful
Update on the Qubeley, or more specifically the paint. Had a bit of a breakthrough in figuring out colors and pattern. Digital color shift over metalic and chrome accents. While I initially did not want to do blue for some reason I did eventually settle on it as the main color. For the color shift I decided on a green/blue one. Lastly the chrome I think will tie everything together nicely.
As an aside I do recommend this book as a great reference for choosing colors on custom build.
Congrats on the breakthrough!
I must say, that metallic blue is amazing. Looks like it takes quite the process to get there, but the results. WOW
I’m going to have to look into that book. Can always use another good reference on color theory.
Thats just paint BTW, done as a quick paint sample. For an actual kit application polish and wax will also ve applied.
Perhaps I misunderstood what was on the piece of paper. I thought that was all the prep you did before applying the Cobalt blue.
