Hello all…started to add zimmerit last night and after about 15 minutes, my wife came down to ask what stinks. Turns out the the Tamiya Polyester Putty is a little too smelly. (She’s pregnant, so I can understand her concern about toxic fumes). Does anyone else use something else that is not so smelly, but could still be used with the Tamiya zimmerit tools? I know I could go outside, but it has been raining alot here.

I have to side with your wife on this one. While your adult-sized liver might do an okay job of flushing your blood and keeping the central nervous system damage down, a developing fetus might not be so lucky. Your wife’s body is going through a lot right now and may not handle the detox that well either.
If drinking alcohol is right out during pregnancy, I’d add inhaling Solvents and Polyesters as well.
While I know a lot of people may think I’m overboard on this (I know I would have too when I was younger) after a couple of months in NYU medical center learning how to walk again after the removal of a spinal cord tumor, I tend to lean on the cautious side.
Oh, I forget to mention, I don’t know of any current non-toxic substitute but plan on working on one soon.

There is a red putty that testers makes. Not as smelly but from my 5 dirrerent tubes it all stinks!!
I seem to remember reading that Apoxi Sculpt (Aves – see ad in FSM) isn’t too bad, but I could be remembering a bad dream or something. Drop them an e-mail and ask them. (Realtively cheep, too). I’d do the same with RJ Products and their Zimm-It-Rite product. Good luck.

can not think of any putty that is not heavy solvent based.
i have never used milliput.
does anyone have the lowdown on that?
Not sure about the Milliput, but I don’t think it will work with the Tamiya tools.

that is probably true.
whenever i see someone doing it, it looks more like rolled out cookie or bread dough than putty.
probably would not ‘rake’ well at all.
I’ve got Zimm-it-rite from R&J products. It works really great with the Tamiya tools or other methods. It’s a two part resin putty. The resin doesn’t smell too bad at all, the hardener is a bit stout though.

ive got to finnish my Panther A and i kneed to zim it, my Soon to be Wife is 32 weeks pregnant and im concerned about her too
ive seen an article about using Milliput and the Tamiya zim tool, the trick is you have to keep the surface of the milliput wet and clean the tool after each pass
there are two ways to aply the milliput, one is the roll it out and place on the model (a bit like making a pastry pie)
and the other is in the AFV Modeler mag 17 on the Panther, and thats to aply onto the model and level it out
then keep the surface damp/wettish and use the tool
I just picked up some Milliput form the LHS…I found a website that mentioned that if you keep the Zimmerit tool clean and damp, as well as taking your finger and getting the surface of the milliput wet once it is on the model, the tools can be used. I am going to give it a try and see what happens. I am working on a cheap tamiya Panther A and this is my first model that I have built since I was a kid, and the first one that I have done seriously. Next project is to have to paint it, which is something I am not looking forward to. The assembly seems to be a lot easier than painting!
