My latest bust is another from Young Miniatures, the Tamplar Knight in Jerusaem. Another nice bust from them, goes together like a dream after its all painted. The cross on the shield took a few attempts to get right. I am especially pleased with the finish on the white parts. I painted with Acrylics and Humbrol metalcote for the chainmail and used oils to weather.

Bish, you did a terrific job on this. Really nice paint work. More figure painting should be in your future endeavors. His face has a “Sir Sean Connery” vibe to it. At least that’s what I see. Again, nice work.
Thanks knox. The Mrs and i both saw Sean in the look of the bust. Not sure if that was intended as i don’t recall a movie where he would have played a Tamplar, unless it was Robin Hood. I know they have some busts based on movie character but it does not actually name them.
I am rather getting into busts. I ahve another that the Mrs got me for my borthday a couple of years back when she got the Templar and one i bought recently. And it’s my birthday in a few months and i have a good idea i will get a couple more. She rather likes the Youngs busts.

Beautiful work Bish. Love the shading and weathering. I can’t recall Mr. Bond as a Templar, but the headress definately reminds me of his role in the Wind and the Lion.

Excellent work! The chainmail and shield look well worn and “used”. Always have been interested in the Knights Templers. Did it require a lot of clean up and did the stand come with it?
Thanks Tom. Youngs kits are lovely. I always say i don’t bild these so much as paint and assemble. There is usually a couple of pour stubs to remove bt that is it, i have always found the fit to be perfect.
No, the base did not come with it, its from Andrea Miniatures, a Spanish firm.
Thanks Bish. I’ve been wanting to start figure painting, did a Viking bust some years ago, but the face and especially the eyes, worry me. Haven’t really used oil paints except for as washes for weathering my other models. Any suggestions for either books or web sites to refer to for figure painting tips? Went on Amazon and they have a few old Verlindeen busts for a pretty low price, thought that they would be good to practice on.

I have not used any books or video’s, i have just picked up tips as i went along from here and the club i belong to. Most of it has been trial and error. I have been making 35th figures for years so had some idea, though the faces never came out right. Doing these larger scale busts has really helped me with that. If i get stuck on somthing i will usually put the bust to one side until i come across an idea, thats often why they take so long. I have now done 6 busts and they have all been a learning curve, usually because they have colours and materials i am not used to with WW2 figures.

You are making me want to do figures agin. Guess I gotta! That’s a nice go at what for some would be a scary subject. Face is great. But! Did you have to let him get so close with his shield to the bad guy. WOW !

Andrea, the company thats make the base i used, also has a range of books for figures and busts. I have not tried any yet, but i might grab somthing next time i order a base.
Great job there Bish! Love the look of the chain mail and the worn look of the shield. Makes sense since you want your foe to beat on your shield instead of beating on you!
And he does have a neat resemblense to Connery.

Very nicely done! As others have said the battle damage and the shading on the chain mail and fabric look great (as does the rest).
Figure painting is a skill (one of MANY) that I do not posses in any measurable quantity lol.
I’m curious, do you find the larger busts easier or more challenging than something like a 1:35 scale figure?

Gil, good question. Ashide from working out what colours to use and how to paint certain things (my 35th figures tend to be field grey or camo and don’t tend to wear chain mail or fur) i would say easier over all. I do find i spend more time getting the face as good as i tend as thats the one area i always struggle with ancd i believe its the one part which can make or break a figure or bust, what ever scale.
