Is there a definition of the word “Fly” that I have not been made privy to? Otherwise, I still haven’t figured out how I’ve been insulted. Of course I’m a “fly” boy. I can’t get interested in things that a) have four wheels and clog freeways and b) were turned into instruments of warfare when some fool decided to put a big gun on a bulldozer. At least the airplane was an original concept.[:X]

Nobody’s complaining that airplanes pollute the air and destroy ozone! If you think about it, airplanes haul car parts from China, Taiwan, and Japan for you. Also, the Hemi engine was designed for an airplane- XP-47H. Look it up when you get out of rush hour.
Well, you’re mostly correct. Actually, people were complaining about the Concord’s exhaust eating up the ozone. All 13 airplanes. However, it’s not lefty bunk (and let’s not get into a political argument here, PLEEEEAAAAASE). One of the problems NASA is having in developing the hypersonic transport is, if you have a thousand of these suckers whizzing about so high up, they will eat up the ozone layer. And then all our children will risk being born naked.

In addition to the Hemi (of which I want one SO BAD!!!), Chrysler also designed the M1A1 Abrams tank, and has provided the engines for many of our past tanks. Besides, ANYBODY can build a tank model; it takes real know-how to build an aircraft model. (Let’s see how many ground-pounders that last comment ticks off!![:D][:D])

… didn’t General Dynamics Land Systems design the M1 Abrams? I know for certain that they build them today. Off course GD designed the F-16, but that eventually got sold to Lockheed Martin.
Who needs an LGB going through a truck window? There is a famous photo that won the Pulitzer prize in the mid-70s. It shows two guys running for dear life from a truck just before a Cessna dives right into it. It’s sort of like rock, paper, scissors. Plane always beats truck. And A-10 ALWAYS beats tank.

Chrysler designed them and built the prototypes, General Dynamics builds them. I saw a show about this on one of the Discovery channels, but I can’t remember why Chrysler didn’t get to build them. They shoulda put a couple of Keith Black Hemis in them instead of a gas turbine.[:D][:D]
Gunny, the Concord fleet is indeed grounded. But now, the future of air transport, many people believe, including NASA, is the hypersonic transport. But a/c that fly that high play hell on the ions that make up the ozone layer that keeps us from getting cancer. So they’re still trying to figure out how to fly at Mach 8 or 10, on the edge of space, without screwing up the ozone layer. It wasn’t a problem when you only had 13 Concords. But whole fleets of super duper airliners in 50 years could be a real problem.
Oh, and wasn’t there a scandal involving the Chrysler turbine that was to power the original design of the M1 tank? I remember the Congressional brouhaha at the time, because Army and corporate types were trying their best to hide this problem. It almost spelt the end of that weapons system, which, as even we flyboys know, turned out to be pretty good.
Oh, and taking my full share of blame for it, I must ask, why have we allowed this thread to live on so long? I fear we are proving the man’s original point.[V]
