I dug this old kit out of the stash last month and thought it would be a nice break to build something right out of the box raised panel lines be damned.
Its the older H’gawa F-4B/N with raised lines. I rescribed most of them, just couldn’t resist, and used after market decals. Everything else is out of the box. My idea was to build it wheels up and mount it to another wall plaque (like my f-104 awhile back) with arcrylic rod. Not to the stand just yet.
That is one gorgeous Phantom. The panel lines are superb. I have a question tho, the burner cans appear to be the longer versions for the J or S models. Why is that?
Out-freaking-standing!!! Awesome build and I agree those panel line are superb! I hope my Revell 1/48 F/A-18C panel line scribe looks as good at your Phantom.
The burner cans are one of two sets provided with the kit. According to the instructions, this is the set used for the B/N variant. The other set does not have the conspicuous primary reinforce rings, they are all turkey feathers. Regardless, the kit offerings are pretty sad in that department. I have a nice 1/48th H’gawa ‘S’ in the stash with all the AM goodies. I will be using some nice Aires cans on that bird.
Sweet Phantom! Really nice panel lines, what’s your method? I’m working on my S-3 right now and have actually used 3 different methods to see which worked best. I’m curious about how you got the subtle shading around each panel line.[tup]
No real big secret with the lines. Actually mine are kinda messy compared to the gorgeous work I see here alll the time. I just used the tried and true method of using gorund pastel on the lines with a light wash. I then use a very thinned lightened coat of my base color airbrushed to the middle of the panels.
Looks great! Like the idea of some “gear up” models on stands or “flying out” the wall! May have to try that again. I did a B-25 years ago. I’ve got a couple of the “thin wing” F-4B kits tucked away. I would have thought they would have done them in the new recessed panel lines by now.
