Yes Virginia, there are 1/72 scale Pipers!

It feels good to fianlly be able to post in the Winged Wonder Forum for once! I finally have some aircraft that are small enough for my cheap digicam to handle!

At a recent model club meeting, I was able to buy at our distressed kit auction a couple of 1/72 scale Piper aircraft: An Aztec and a Cherokee. I got them for three bucks each! They are old Aurora lits and I have enough pieces in each box to build two kits of each if I choose!

Here are some of the WIP pics that I have:

This is a shot of the weights I had to squeeze into the nose of the Cherokee to get it to stand right:

And here is the Cherokee ready to paint:

And here is the Piper Aztec ready to paint:

They already have a coat of White on them, but I’m waiting for it to dry before I take more pics.

I hope you enjoy them!

Nice to see something a bit different once in a while!

Hey, that’s pretty neat! Thanks for posting the pics.

Regards,

-Drew

Thanks dj! I’m glad I was able to take these. I’ll have more pics up later after the paint dries.

You’re welcome Lufbery! I remember once about a month or so ago, someone made a comment; something about these planes not being in 1/72 scale kits. I thought it would be neat to show them.

Here are the two Pipers after I painted them white. I used a rattle can of Gloss White, and then when the paint was dry, I quickly coated it with Future gloss. That way, if they get dirty, or painted, I can clean them easily without ruining the white paint.

I still have the Masking Agent on the windows. I use Hobbyco Liquid Mask. It is the best I’ve encountered out of the four brands I tried.

Here is the Aztec:

and the Cherokee:

I hope you enjoy them!

Hi Duke thanks for sharing. i’d like to get hold of one of those Aztec kits but i bet their as rare as fresh dinosaur …errr… eggs. its one of the types that i have worked on and not yet gotten a kit of. i have the airfix cherokee six and it looks like it will make a nice kit. again thanks for sharing. Greg

Well, if you don’t mind it in 1/72 scale, I still have enough pieces left over to build another complete model. At least I beIieve everything is there. I’ll have to check to be certain. It cost me 4 bucks at my IPMS club’s distressed kit auction this month (Dec.)

hi Duke 1/72 suits me fine as most of my collection is in this scale. what is your preferred payment method and ho much would you want in total for the kit and postage/packing ? please let me know either here or via e-mail at bev@greg34.fsnet.co.uk . cheers and happy new year. Greg

Hey Duke,

They look really good. I’ve used the Ambroid liquid mask and liked the results, but I haven’t tried the Hobbyco. What are the other brands that you’ve used?

How was the interior detail on the kits you got?

Regards,

-Drew

Well, I got it for only three dollars, and it was partially built already. The rest of the pieces for another one are still in the box, albeit not all on sprues. I want to go through it first to see if everything is there. If it is, then let me know how much Postage is from Los Angeles California to where you live and we’ll call it even. I’ll go check it out for you and be back ina few days to let you know the condition of the kit.

Along with the Hobbyco brand, I’ve used the Micro Mask, the Tamiya Liquid Mask, and another brand who’s name escapes me at the moment. I don’t believe I’e ever used the Ambroid Brand. I might have to take a look at it. Of all the others I used, I like the Hoobyco the best.

The interior of the Aztec and Cherokee were very basic, and no decals were available for the Control panel. The boxes I got were from a distressed kit auction at my club meeting, so one each of these were started already. The boxes had post-it notes on them saying "Exrtra parts inculded, should build into one complete kit. So far, upon inspectyion, I have enough parts to complete two more Cherokees and one more Aztec. I need to look closer to be certain though. If that is the case, gregers is getting the Aztec.

As I mentioned, the kits had basic interiors, but whoever started them had added seatbelts which look great!

I’ll post more pics when I get more done on them.

Hi Duke, many thanks, if the kit is basically complete i am interested, stuff like props, interior and undercart i can make or get from my spares box. i live in the UK and i am not too sure how much the postage will be. i recently sent a diecast car to the mid United States and it cost roughly $8. if i send you $10 do you think this will cover it? i am asking because i have no idea of the US postage rates. cheers in advance. Greg

I think $10 dollars should do it. I don’t know what International package postage is, but overseas post is 47cents for a standard letter. It is a pretty lightweight kit, so there shouldn’t be too much problem.

After checking the kit more thoroughly, I found that paint was started. There is some copper painted on one side that looks to be an experiment. Could probably be removed fairly easily. The person who started it made a vacuformed Canopy it is still in the kit, as I used the original windscreen The original side windows are still in the kit along with what look like more custom-made side windows. The pieces I determined were missing are the interior seats, the cockpit control panel and one of the side wheels. Otherwise, everything else is there.

It is a fairly basic kit; looks like it was made early seventies or so.

My E-mail is mark@deliduka.com, send me word when the money order/check is on the way. Put “Finescale Modeler-Piper Aztec” in the subject line so that it doesn’t get deleted as Spam. Also, let me know how you want it shipped, Airmail or Ground/Sea. Probably Airmail, but I had to ask. I’ll send my Address to your E-mail so that it is kept private.

I’ll have it all packed up and ready. Also, be sure to use a Decal Film over the decals. They look original and may fall apart if not treated first!

Hi Duke, due to work comitments it’ll probably be next weekend when i get to the bank to get a money order sorted. i’ll e-mail you as soon as its in the post. if the money dosn’t cover airmail surface is fine. cheers. Greg

While we’re on the topic of Piper’s__ Does anyone know if there is a 1/72 kit currently available of the Navajo light twin?
Happy new year!

Tim

not seen one Tim but i’ll have a look around for you. Greg

Sounds good gregers, I’ll be looking for it. BTW, I went ahead and applied the decal film to your set of decals. They should be fine now. Have some on hand just in case though.

Hi Duke, thanks for that and will do with having the decal film ready. i went to the bank today and they said the best way to sort the money if or me to post a $10 bill to you by registered post so thats what i will do. the other way would have been for me to pay the money at this end at a beureau du change and have you pick it up at your nearest bank. (they would have charged £22 - roughly $40 - for this (not including the $10 for you) i will post it in the next couple of days. thanks, Greg

btw e-mail on its way with my address on. Greg
