yellow paint

Hi, I know that yellow is a primary color, I would like to know if there is another color, that I can add to it to give a deeper or darker yellow.

I have a light yellow, and would like to make it darker. thank you in advance

I went Wally world and bought a Pocket Color Wheel. According to that, to shade the color you would add black. I have not tried it myself but, the color wheel was less than $2.00 when I bought it. It might be worth a try. [:D]

It would also depend on the color of yellow you want. Adding dark green or dark red would darken it, but would also change the yellow color. Conversely, adding white would lighten it.

The bigger question is how much of the tint paint do you add?

or, if you add a TINY, TINY bit of red, it will make a more orangy, deeper yellow.

Hi Grhornet,

Yellow is a funny colour to alter. If you add black it tends to edge towards green shades which incidently are good for the WW1 dope finishes. Adding red or green will either give orange or a lighter green. I normally add brown to yellow to give a darker tint of the original and either a lighter yellow or white to lighten. Another quick tip is if your using enamels small amounts of artists oil colours is an easy way to make variations. Those mixed colourboxes you often find inthe cheap stores are ok just remember to dilute well with white spirit if airbrushing.

I remember way back from art class we weren’t allowed to darken paint with black because it flattens the colour, instead we added the opposite colour on the colour wheel, that might be worth a shot with a small amount to test. I darken up yellow with orange to pretty good effect to get an RCAF trainer yellow.

Thanks for your help. After experminting, with all of the suggestions, it was the red that I needed to get the color that I wanted. But when he said a tiny, tiny amount that is what he ment. Thanks Richard
