Yak yak yak.....

… from Accurate Miniatures. A Yak-1 with skis (but I used wheels), to be more precise.

The kit was very nice. I’d receommend it to anyone. I’ve done a more complete build report on my blog… here’s a few pics.

I used after-market decals. They’re actually for a Yak-7 or -9, but I thought they looked cool, so I slapped 'em on there.

(Ooops! Forgot to fill in the air intake with some wash!)

Some interior shots:

The exhausts were tiny. I used a needle to “drill them out”:

A little closer view of the decals I liked:

And at mucker’s request, a shot of the underside. Had a little trouble with getting the wash off, thus the staining. But it’s the underside… [;)]

This was a fun little plane to build… if you can find one, grab it!

Nice job, jwb! I like it. What scale is that? 1/72?

Sharp-looking build, Jon. It is a great little kit, ain’t it? [;)]

Nice lookin YAAAAAAAAAAk You have there Jon. Thats one country i have yet to bult. But if i did it would have to be one of the big jets.

Jon, where’d you get your paint? I would really like to do a WWII Soviet bird, but the only paints I’ve heard of come from across the pond!

You done real good. What’d you use to mask, man?

TryintoModel- Thanks! It’s 1/48 scale.

ruddratt- Thanks so much- yeah, it’s a great kit. I’ll probably do another one and add the skis this time.

smokinguns2- Thanks- this is my first Russian bird.

RadMax8- Polly Scale! I used USSR underside blue, US Tac Mid Green and Grimy Black. The masking was plain old blue masking tape. For the interior I used US Light Ghost Gray.

Great Looking Yak Jon

you like AM don’t you. So for the P-51A I for is GOOD

Bud

Very nice. I like some of the Russian a/c like the La 7 and the Stormovik. I built the Gavia La 7 which is also a great kit.

Hey Jon,

Its all yer fault my friend. I have a handful of these Lil Ships just waiting to be built and I think one will be leaving its nest shortly… [:P]

You did a very nice job on your build over all, thank you for sharing.

Rad,

Model Master does a seperate line of US, Ger, Brit, USSR colours as well. Just check w/ your LHS b/c mine carries em

Flaps up,

Mike

jwb me and my dad built it and it didnt seem very good, ie tight fit of pit, other fit issues. Didnt seem very good are yu sure it’s the same kit? very good job. [tup][tup]

Great looking Yak, job. I appreciate your thoughts about the kit as I, too, would like to do a few Soviet “Great War” planes. Your build is encouraging. Great looking finish…it looks like Polyscale Clear Flat from here…my favorite.

BTW, can you post a pic of the underside. I’d like to take a good look at the underside blue.

Jon…you just keep getting better. Nice looking Yak.

Nice looking Yak

Thad

Dubau- Thanks so much. That Pi-51A is a pretty sweet kit- I do like AM.

Ranger2Seven- Thanks. I have the Eduard La-5 Weekend Edition in the stash, and I’m looking forward to that build.

Butz- Thanks man! You’ll enjoy the build.

ygmodeler4- Thanks so much. I did have some issues with the cockpit, but I’m pretty forgiving. If it goes together well for the most part, I enjoy it. I detailed a bit more of the build on my blog.

mucker- Thanks! I actually used that rattle can Testors stuff to dull it out. I’ll post a pic of the underside- I had some staining issues with the wash, but it wasn’t too bad.

wing_nut- Thanks so much for the encouragement!

KINGTHAD- Thanks so much!

Thanks, Jon. Underside staining would be a normal appearance on any given airplane , and I’ve seen many pictures of some very dirty Soviet planes, so don’t think anything of it. I can’t wait to see the pics.

How did you handle the fuel level sight windows on the tops of the wings? I am not happy at all with how mine came out, yours look great!

VERY nice build Jon! Now it’s that time that your fingers start itching to build a bf 109, don’t they?!

gatormark91- Thanks for the kind words. Believe it or not, I hand painted them. I just blobbed in the white paint with a 000 brush, then used the same brush to dab in the red and black paint. This left it a little rough. So I cleaned it up using a home-made brush that is a single cat whisker super glue into the end of a wooden skewer. (No I am not making it up, and no cats were harmed in the process…[;)]) The whisker brush is fine enough to get very fine lines, stiff enough to not bend if you don’t want it to, but pliable enough to bend if you do want it to. I used black paint and the feline brush to paint the little lines and do some cleanup work around the rough edges. I put a drop of wite glue in the gauge, popped in the clear cover, and I was done!

1/72- Thanks so much! Actually, next up is a P-40C AVG Bird, then a Spitfire Mk. IX, then a P-39, and a Spitfire F. 22/24- all for various GBs. Then maybe I’ll pull that -109G14 outta the stash! [:)]

Hey jbw,

Your most welcome… Yeah, I am actually lookin forward to diggin into one of these Beasts… MMmmm now what scheme should I do…

Flaps up, Mike

Neato! Thanks, Jon. What a beautiful color.

Maybe it’s the pictures, but throw some of that sludge wash down into the wheel bays!

Either way, terrific plane, Jon. Thanks for sharing
