WWII U.S. Aircraft Interiors: Chromate Green or Yellow?

Just saw the new Academy 1/72 P-38 Lightning (sweet!) at the LHS and looking at the box pics, particularly that of the interior, I remembered a question I’ve wanted to ask before but forgot: when is it applicable to use either Chromate Green or Chromate Yellow as an interior color in WWII U.S. planes? Is this a period thing like the RLM 02 and RLM 66 (after-1941) standard with the Luftwaffe, or was this dictated by the plane manufacturers themselves? I don’t think these colors were field-applied and surely the U.S. didn’t experience production problems as the Germans did, so there must’ve been a painting standard that was followed. I noticed that chromate yellow seems to be used in the latter half of the war and thus appeared on later fighters, but this maybe just from the limited number of models I have or that the kit manufacturers may be plainly wrong. Anyway, would like to hear the facts from you experts out there.

Try that , it’s very in depth and seems very well researched, I haven’t even got to the end of it yet!

That is the link to check out. It has all the info you will need.

Hey Guys! I read the article too…it’s very informative, but leaves me with the impression that most of my models are not accurate!!!
I guess I have to consult it with my next projects coming soon

Holy jeepers! That’s a very involved article! Thanks, keith-a, I have something to sink my teeth on. Funny, though, that IPMS USA didn’t come up with that research, having access to the resources and all. Once again, Stockholm has come through with these in-depth articles. Nice read.

Happy modelling, guys,
