Hey everyone the other while at work I was thinking of some future builds that I wanted to do and came with an idea to honor those who served in WWII. However, after thinking about I realized that to do it properly that I would have to build two models one from each theater. My question to you all is What would you say is the most recognizable piece of equipment from each theater. My thoughts on it so far is U.S.S Missouri from the Pacific theater and maybe the B-17 from the European theater. I just wanted to ask other who are a lot more knowledgeable about that war than I am.
I feel that it would be cool when it’s done providing I can do it right and get what’s in my head onto the plastic. It’s going to be a dio of a sorts but the paints schemes aren’t going to be traditional, my goal is to make them look like a mural of the major milestones of each theater, i.e Iwo Jima would be one I use and so would D-Day. Obviously I would need a lot of work space that’s why I was thinking of may be Big Mo but I don’t know of any well known ships from the Euro theater.
Well I’ve babbled long enough. I can’t wait to get as much input as possible from you all, and get the build under way.

For ships I would suggest ones that participated for longer terms. Perhaps the Enterprise (CV-6) for the Pacific since she particiapted in all the major battles and several minor ones except Coral Sea. The Missouri was only around in combat for the last year and a half or so. In the Atlantic it’s harder to choose a similar USN ship. The Ranger (CV-4), Wasp (CV-7), Nevada, or Massachusets all had historical impact in that theater, especially Nevada. The B-17, or perhaps a C-47 definitely are good options though.
Are you only planning for Europe and the Pacific? What about the CBI Theater? The C-46 did yeoman work hauling supplies ove the Hump. Williams Bros. makes one in 1/72. The Pacific wasn’t just the Navy and Marines on ships. There is also the Southwest Pacific Theater with Army paratroopers jumping from C-47’s. The 5th Air Force had P-38 fighters and B-25 strafers. And don’t forget the Aleutians. Lots of people do. Obviously, I’m partial to a/c.
Y’know Broos, I thought I might make a suggestion quite easily. Can’t be done…I’ve sat for 30 min. making various comparisons in my mind. Ship vs A/C…ship vs ship…A/C vs A/C…missions and chronology all get in the way!
Maybe Gen. Eisenhower vs Adm. Nimitz?..as figures? I know that’s not what you want to hear.
Tough to find a common icon for both Theatres…except for the boots on the ground and decks.
Sorry…tried to help…but you made me think
Thank you to everyone who replied with a suggestion. I know it’s hard to sum up the enitre war on all fronts with just two icons from that era, that is the problem I was having deciding ecspecially being unfamiliar with the war’s history. I like the idea of the Nevada and the Enterprise that will give me two large painting surfaces to display the big engagements and milestones from all theaters. Thank you all

My suggestion:
-
ETO C-47, PTO SBD
-
ETO Jeep, PTO M4 Sherman
-
ETO Liberty Ship, PTO USS Arizona
Each is Iconic in its own right, and most people will think of these when asked. Plus people who don’t know history will recognize them also.
Build a Sherman. They were used in every theatre of the war.
roadkill, thank you for that tip I just looked up the Liberty ship and I think that will work for the idea that I have in mind for this project. I still have tons of research to do and information to get from the web. As well with the suggestion of the Arizona I think that would look really good in the Dio setting I’m hoping to create. Thank you for the input.
