Last weekend I had a chance to see the History Channel special about Dogfighters, it was great. It also inspired me to build the aircraft I saw. This weekend I picked up an Arii P-51D and I have found some aftermarket decals to model Old Crow. I need to know now what model of Bf 109 that was talked about in the show. Anyone know? Any idea for markings?
Considering that the “D” didn’t show up until Dec ‘44, the Me109 was probably an ‘F’ or ‘G’ model. According to Janes’ and the GB of Fighters the most prolific were 'upgraded “E’s”, which became “F’s” or “G’s” which served from that period until the end of the war.
By the time the F model of the 109 would have been largly retired from front line units. The G-6 had been around since the middle of 1943, and was used untill the end of the war. Hasagawa has a very good and prolific series of G-6 models in both 1/48 and 1/72 scales. As for the unit markings, JG’s 1, 11, 4, and 77 were all in germany engaged in home defence around that time, and were using 109’s. I don’t remember them ever saying what unit they were from, so you could probly go with any of those four to be accurate. Many of them were very colorful, so I’d say find some profiles, and go to town! Hope that helps a bit and good luck.!
In the ETO the P-51D most commonly flew against the G-6 early on, as this was the most nermous and in service till wars end. Late war K-4 and G-10’s were used against them. The 109 was up graded quickly and the Reich defence units got the newest planes in service. So depending on what point in the war your talking would depend on the 109. The D stang would not have seen combat against E’s or F’s.
I have built three of the Hasegawa 109’s, the G-5, G-6, and G14, which are all based on the same molds and have found to be rea really good kits taht go together without any major problems. Their the ones thatd get my vote!
