WWI German red????

I was at my LHS today getting colors for my Pfalz D.IIIa (Rudolph Berhtold - red and blue) and the aircraft junkie there told me the Germans didn’t really have a bright red pigment during WWI and the iconographic “Red Baron” red should actually be more of a brick/rust red.

Any other thought/opinions/insight on this? I think I’ll be adding color tomorrow anyway, but for future reference I’d like to get the scoop from the aircraft gurus here - one of my upcoming builds will be building the infamous Fokker Dr.I, in red ofcourse.

Thanks in advance once again!!

He’s probably right. I’m more familiar with WW2 colors & RLM 23 Rot ( FS 31304 ) is a paler red than usually depicted on our models. For WWI, there are no FS equivalents to my knowledge & the only official Luftwaffe red color I’ve seen was called Rose, which was a much darker red than the Ferrari type red depicted on most Red Baron models. But the bright red has become ingrained in our psyche, so a model painted in the correct color might look strange. Kinda wierd aint it [:)].
