I’m trying to finish up my XP-55 Ascender and I need your help. The instructions say to paint the landing gear struts Interior Green. Does this sound right? Was this a common practice back then to paint them Interior Green? I would almost think they’d be aluminum color or maybe even the same color as the underside (Neutral Grey).
Can someone shed some light on this? I’d like to get the plane done so I can take some pictures and show them here on the site.
Can’t give you definite help you with the color of the gear. They were definitely painted on all three aircraft and although the green doesn’t seem too wild a choice, another likely color would be a gray of some sort.
These walkarounds of the second prototype don’t show the gear at all, but you may find them to be interesting, if not helpful:
I can at least assure you that the interior green nose and main gear struts were by no means rare. You would commonly find them on B-24s, B-26s, occasional A-20s, and the tail wheel gear of many planes.
Thank you so much for the input! I love this forum. It is truly a bottomless well of information. You guys are so great. Karl, thank you for the lead regarding the other XP-55 being build in the Prototypes and Paper Projects GB. I will definitely check that out.
Thanks again to everyone who helped me out. I hope I can pass on the assistance to someone else who might need help.
