I just purchsed an older issue of the Italeri 1/35 scale Kuebelwagen. The manual includes basic painting instructions for the outside but none for the inside. I want to paint the Kuebelwagen in a desert camouflage. I found on the net that most equipment send to Africa was actually painted in grey and the units itself camouflaged it with whatever paint was available. They used about everything from paints captured out of american or british supplies to a mud-water mixture. Here are my questions:
What colors would I use for the interior? Should I leave the interior grey or sand-color it as well?
What colors where the seats and canvas covers?
3 Where the seats made out of canvas or some kind of artificial leather?
Every hint would be welcome. And if you know a webside that shows some pics of german WW2 softskins, especially the interior that would be even better.
Joe, I have the Dragon DAK kit and the directions call for all of the interior and exterior to be a mixture of 80% middlestone and 20% white.

I built the one with the driver sitting in it with one leg on the ground. Is that the one you are referring to? The detail was very good, a vast improvent over their old one, but the engine compartment is closed and only the bottom half of the engine is visible. I really enjoyed building it.
The vehicles showed up in Grey and were painted with a Sand (Testors calls it “Afrika Mustard” correct color is RLM 79 Sandgelb [sandyellow]) color in Africa. quite often the interior was left grey and the exterior was painted completely or just with a wavy pattern of the Sand over the Grey.
2&3. All seats/pads were black leather early in the war and were brown leather late(after D-Day?). I’m not sure on the top, probably a sand or tan canvas.
That’s the Tamiya 1/35, really nice build. There is an engine kit avaliable for it, Verlinden I think.
Not sure about Verlinden, but Tamiya makes an upgrade kit for it with a mechanic, the engine hatch open, an engine, romoved rear wheel, jack, bench, tools, etc. Looks pretty nice.
the new Kubelwagen and Shwimwagen are great kits im not sure about the 1/48th Kubel only becouse its the same price as the 1/35th kits over here and id rather buy the bigger one
I just picked up the Kubel engine set from Tamiya, and it is top shelf. Excellent, fine, crisp detail. I also have the Italeri Kubel, and I don’t think the two sets will see eye to eye, so look for two Kubels from me in the future!
